1. It's official on the Z's website now; this is awesome. The players will LOVE New Orleans; the facility is still in great shape and the support is very good
2. This is awesome news! The Marlins AAA affiliate will be in my hometown and the team I used to work for. I've been saying this should happen forever and I'm ecstatic that it finally did. Zephyr Field is still a pretty nice facility and it's a lot closer to Miami than ABQ. Go Fish and Go Z's!
3. Great thread; had to add my two cents I remember when the Marlins were born and watching the first game. I had Marlin caps and T-shirts and remember bring surprised at seeing a Marlin pennant in a local restaurant (the waitress said that the owner's son was drafted by the Fish). I watched the AAA prospects in Calgary/Albuquerque at Zephyr Field. Once I moved to Tampa I became even more of a fan as I cannot stand and will not ever support any Tampa team (despise the Bucs, Rays and Lightning). Always loved the Dolphins and Marlins and became more of a Heat and Panthers fan after being able to see their games.
4. Hey MiguelCabrera2420: I'll probably be there for the Saturday and/or Sunday games. To answer your questions, from Tampa it's about a 4 hour drive to Ft. Lauderdale. Depends on traffic, how often you stop, etc. Also depends on where in Tampa you leave from and where in S. Florida you want to wind up. The Trop is in a not-too-great area of St. Pete. There really isn't much near the park itself. In downtown St. Pete there is Baywalk, which has some bars/restaraunts including Dan Marino's Town Tavern. That's about it on that side of the bay. In Tampa, there's Ybor City and Channelside for nightlife, etc. Depends on what you want to do or see; I don't know if there is anything going on in Tampa at that time in June. Have a safe trip from the Metroplex!
5. I was home in N.O. over the weekend and went to the Isotopes/Zephyrs game Saturday night. There was a short weather delay before the game and some of the players were hanging in and around the dugout. I was able to get Ryan Jorgensen's attention and told him that I enjoyed his columns on here and about seeing the Marlins in Spring Training in Jupiter and in Miami during the regular season. He was really nice; it was cool to get to talk to him. Josh Willingham was on the dugout steps talking to a couple for the entire pregame. As for the game itself, the Zephyrs won 2-1. It was a good pitching duel with Frank Castillo pitching very well for the 'Topes and Tony Armas Jr. on a rehab for the Nats pitching well for the Z's. Ryan was the starting catcher and Josh played 3rd. Ryan had a good night throwing out 2 runners trying to steal. Late in the game, Ryan left and Josh caught the last couple of innings. I'm glad that I was able to be there for the best game of the series; Friday night and Sunday afternoon's games were blowouts.
6. Just curious as to everyone's experience at Dolphins Stadium for Marlins games. I was at the Sat/Sun games vs the Nats this past weekend and basically had a good time with little incident but a few things ticked me off. Sun I was harassed twice by the gatekeepers over my plastic bottle of soda. I had to point out to one of them that it is allowed and to another that I had not opened it twice! Then, on the concourse on both days lots of people bumping, pushing and shoving. No "excuse me" or anything else. Also, lots of people constantly climbing over me in the seats. Finally, the whole giveaway for kids deal. The Billy the Marlin bank looks really cool and I find it unfair that it is only given to kids. Kids' don't drive 5 hours or buy tickets or expensive concessions, etc. I have nothing against kids or giveaways for them but why not make all giveaways for all fans? Maybe I have kids or godkids or nieces/nephews at home. I bought tickets and showed up early; why leave anyone out? Anway, that was my experience. Curious if anyone else has had the same, better or worse.
7. NolaMarlin, That is awesome! People don't understand how you fall in love with New Orleans and its teams. I only like the Zs and Saints from Louisiana. 730783 Yep, there's no place like home! I'm counting the days until Memorial Day...
8. NolaMarlin, Deanie's is my favorite place in whole world. I think Boudreaux is awesome. The hats are sweet. I lived there for year and half. I am also a big Saints fan. I am a grad from New Orleans Baptist Theological seminary on Gentilly. 730751 Very Cool! I still bleed black and gold! I have a friend who went to NOBTS and one of my current co-workers' brother went there also. I've been on campus once for WBSN's "Live at Cafe N.O." nights.
9. Unfortunately I don't get back home until Memorial day weekend and the Z's are on the road; not sure when I'll get to see them this season. I don't have either of the bobbleheads but I've got the stuffed mascots for both teams. Billy is very cool and most people think that Boudreaux is a beaver! "If ya ain't in Bucktown, ya ain't at Deanie's" Brings back memories...
10. Hey fishngrits: Good to see a Zephyrs fan on here. GAEUX Z's and GEAUX FISH! Now, if the Marlins would just dump Albuquerque and make the Z's their AAA affiliate I'd be in heaven!
11. This letter-to-the-editor from the Mayor is a pile of garbage; he's just trying to defend his awful city and stadium. It neglects to mention the weekly riots, the horrible neightborhood they put the ballpark in, the overpriced parking, food , souvenirs, etc. The Trop has all the atmosphere and excitement of a morgue. The only good thing to be said about the place is that it is indoors in air-conditioned comfort which is nice during the hot summer but that is all.
12. Hey CMF: I'm from New Orleans and saw the Cannons play the Zephyrs several times. I worked in the PA booth and was the only one in the room who knew the words to O CANADA. I still have my Calgary Cannons cap. I was sad to see both Calgary and Edmonton lose their teams; now with the minor-league affiliation shuffle New Orleans has basically Edmonton's old team. I e-mailed the Marlins asking why they renewed their agreement with Albuquerque rather than move their affiliaiton closer (like New Orleans) and never received a reply. One of the downfalls of being a minor-league baseball fan; teams move, affiliations change, players never stay, etc. And with no hcokey it's got to be a sad time up there.
13. Got up early and got online at 9 and got tix for the one game I'll be able to make: Mar 6th vs St Louis. Got decent seats down the third base line right by the Marlin dugout. I wish that the tickets weren't so ridiculously expensive. The Fish/Redbirds at Dean and the Sox in Ft. Myers are the most expensive tix in FL. And the Marlins are jacking up ticket prices for weekend games. Just what I want as a thank you for my 8 hour round trip commute. Better be a good game and more players better sign than the last time I went.
14. I'm trying to figure out the pitching rotation for this weekend's series at Tampa. A.J. Burnett is scheduled to go on Friday night and Josh Beckett likely for Saturday. Anyone know who is scheduled for Sunday? I'm already bummed that the D-Train won't be pitching in this series :mad :
15. Just curious if anyone is coming to Tampa for the Marlins/Rays series next weekend. I hope to go to 2 of the 3 games; I'm waiting to see the pitching matchups before deciding what days I go.
16. You forgot to list none (Works for PBS; would never watch it at home)
17. Unfortunately, this garbage happens everywhere. Last week at the Red Sox-Devil Rays game at the Trop I had the misfortune of sitting around a group of high school kids who ran around, kept getting up and climbing all over the place, beating each other with Thunderstix while the parents sat and watched it all and did nothing but continue their conversation about lawn mowing (I kid you not; the most boring conversation I've ever had the misfortune to overhear). I understand cheering your team or talking about the game or the player at bat or something related but a little bit goes a long way.
18. Thanks llahsram. Good to see another Fish, LSU and Hornets fan as well.
19. L!S!U! Tigers Win! Tigers Win!
