You're right about Hanley being a clubhouse cancer, and that likely being the main reason to move him at the 2012 deadline. Maybe it's me being uncharitable, but even if Hanley was a model citizen, he would've been dumped with everyone else ~4 months later anyway. (It feels appropriate that the FA signing that killed momentum was the one Loria allegedly pushed for, heh.)

That magical 2003 run and nostalgia really helps whitewash the majority of Loria's tenure. If we're stuck with poverty ownership biding its time until cashing out on a franchise sale, I much rather have the ownership that attempts to hire someone competent and is hands-off outside of setting budget. I don't want to go back to regularly spending below the franchise's allotted draft pool. Attaching comp picks and prospects in lieu of eating salary in dump trades. Making "go for it" trades that are obviously bad at the jump (e.g., Rodney). Structuring every contract as heavily backloaded, so you know within a season when they'd be dealt. I can't even remember the last star player before Sandy who played out their first arb buyout contract with this team. Even Loria's beloved Hanley was shipped to the Dodgers when the backloaded half hit. Also can't remember the last time the Marlins gained a prospect by eating salary (Conine for Villar). Current ownership sucks, but fuck Loria.

Man, spin it however you want, but I doubt they had only 600 people there in Texas. We are the only place where that ever happens. Attendance won't be announced for several innings, but this appears to be the smallest actual attendance I've ever seen in Arlington in 12 seasons. There is not a single section in the stadium that looks even half-way full. Some in the press box have guessed seriously that there are less than 1,000 people here. I'm going to say it's under 2,500. I'm jealous of all of you. Yeah, the only games I'll be making this season most likely are weekend trips to the Nationals and Phillies series in May. Living in Huntsville, I'll probably catch a couple of the Carolina Mudcats games when they have an extended series in June.
