MLB Extra Innings may go to DirecTV exclusively in 2007
Feb. 22, 2007, 7:30 PM ET FCC investigating MLB's proposed DirecTV deal Associated Press WASHINGTON -- The government is investigating a proposed deal between Major League Baseball and DirecTV Inc. that has had fans in a tizzy. MLB reportedly seeks to strike an exclusive deal with the satellite television provider to offer its "Extra Innings" baseball package. Disclosure of the Federal Communications Commission's investigation of any such deal came in a letter from FCC chairman Kevin Martin that Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., released Thursday. The programming option allows baseball fans who live outside the markets of their favorite teams to watch them play for an extra fee. It is currently available to a number of cable and satellite television providers. Kerry had asked Martin to investigate the "proposed $700 million television deal that could deny many consumers the ability to watch their favorite teams." Martin, in reply, wrote Kerry: "I share your concerns regarding this proposed deal." The chairman added that he understood the package had been available to 75 million cable and satellite viewers for the past several years, and would only be viewable by DirecTV customers if a deal were signed. "I am concerned whenever consumers cannot purchase the programming they want or are forced to purchase programming they don't want," Martin wrote. DirecTV has never confirmed that the widely reported deal even exists. Robert Mercer, director of public relations for DirecTV, declined to comment late Thursday. Martin wrote that the agency has "contacted the parties and requested additional information about their proposed arrangement. Once we have this information, we will report to you on the deal's implications for consumers and any recommended changes to the law to ameliorate any harms to consumers." copyright 2007 by Associated Press http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2775761

Ballpark Funding Approved
Bad times might be ahead for state budget BY MARC CAPUTO AND MARY ELLEN KLAS mcaputo@MiamiHerald.com TALLAHASSEE - It's almost official: The days of fat tax collections for the state are near an end. After years of paying for new programs and cutting taxes, Florida legislators are now preparing themselves to spend less as they face a new economic cycle in which the state won't reap higher-than-expected tax collections the way it has for years. House Speaker Marco Rubio, R-Miami, told legislators in a letter issued late Monday that they should be ready to face the prospect of having almost none of the $3.2 billion -- nearly a third from South Florida -- in bring-home-the-bacon projects proposed by all 120 House legislators. The ''good news,'' Rubio wrote, is that the state will be able to pay to continue all of its services. ''The bad news,'' he said, ``is that a continuation budget does not include funding for program expansions, new initiatives or member projects.'' That could mean one perennial proposal -- to give a $60 million tax break to help the Florida Marlins build a new ballpark in Miami -- is a goner, as is an $800,000 item to improve Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale or the $2 million to pay for Key Biscayne sewer improvements. Rubio didn't rule out members' projects completely, just noted that to pay for them, something else in the ''continuation'' budget must be cut. He said a final determination won't be made until state economists meet in March to update their financial forecast for Florida. For years under prior Gov. Jeb Bush, Florida's red-hot real estate market and strong service-based economy poured money intothe state, allowing legislators to cut record sums of taxes and grow the budget. For new Republican Gov. Charlie Crist, the potential bad news didn't hurt his oft-professed optimism. He said state legislators, in addition to local officials, need to tighten their belts. ''We've got to live within our means,'' Crist said. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/16741478.htm There's always something in the way......No matter how smooth you think the road is....

Vikings Propose New Stadium On Site Of Metrodome
if they spend anytime in the new gophers stadium, that is exactly what they'll be doing it's also not so much playing in the conditions - as it is spectating in the conditions The Vikings will have to spend time there(the Gopher stadium). if they build on the Metrodome site. Back when the Vikings played outdoors, at Met Stadium, coach Bud Grant wouldn't allow heaters on the sidelines....he thought it was a sign of weakness. On a sidenote, the Twins are running into some problems with their new ballpark site. The site is small, close to the Target Center(T-wolves). The group, that owns most of the land , is being difficult in talks on the sale of said property. They were very cooperative earlier, but once the site(ballpark location) was chosen....they got greedy. It's going to add more time to the process. if push comes to shove the city can always claim eminent domain. Hennepin County "moved" to condem the land in November, court date is January 22nd. By law, only $90 million can be used for infrastructure, land aquisition is included in that amount. A rep, of the land owner side, has said the the County had budgeted $13.5 million to buy the land(an amount that the rep says is far below market value). County assessed value is $8.37 million. In order for the project to be finished by April 2010, construction is scheduled to begin August '07.

Liriano will miss 2007 season
I think everyone knew Liriano was going to be gone for a good portion if not all of 2007 when he went down for the second time last year. Most of the Twin fans I know didn't expect him back in '07. A lot of them believe that he'll need to eventually change his delivery also.
