Prime Time
Well I remember our Third Baseman Mike Lowell saying last year, If there was no building of a stadium after this year he had something in his contract that said he could walk. Well with the news today, I believe all hopes in a stadium getting built are over. Most likely Lowell will walk next year IMO because he felt really strong on his case on playing in a new stadium. Do you think we should trade him before the deadline this summer to get something in return for him. I like Lowell, a lot. Class guy, and a good player, but under the circumstances I would rather have something in return for him. Thoughts?
jonnylons
what news is everyone talking about?
QuickGold
Of course it always depends on the player we can get for him. If its just a trade to deal Lowell away, then no. If some other team is smoking something and offers us a great replacement then thats a different story.
PBMarlin
Remember, those terms were drawn up by the team to help pursuade legislators to agree to a stadium deal. Mike agreed because he wants to remain a Marlin and was willing to help make a statement. I'll bet that Mike would be willing to rewrite his contract to remain in Miami, his home. Guest Juanky
I have a feeling that Mikey might stay even if the stadium isn't 100% done
RockyMountainMarlin
Mike is my favorite Marlin. Back from cancer and now a superstar. I'd be extremely dissappointed to see him play for anyone else.
rferry
Lowell said when the contract was signed that he feels it is for atleast two years because he does not wish to hit free agency next year when a lot of infielders will be on the market. Prime Time
I am not too sure about that. Last year when he was on Ch. 4 news talking to Jim Berry he sounded like he wanted a new stadium badly. He said he needed it so that baseball could resurrect itself here in So. Fla. He then followed by saying "If not, then I'll have to go else where, afterall it is a business" I want Lowell in South Florida as long as possible but with this, I am not too sure he will stay. TSwift25
Mikey's contract isn't voided yet. The stadium has to be in place by November (1st I believe). Until then, he's ours, remember he also has an option year where he will make $8 mil, not too shabby considering the F.A. market is going to be flooded with quality hitters this offseason (Glaus, Beltran, Renteria, Nomar, Magglio) etc. The plethora of hitters may be enough to make Lowell stay for the option year, even if the stadium isn't done; however, I have a feeling that if there is a successful season and the attendance substantially rises over last year, AND the Marlins management gets their s*** together, we'll get that stadium... Otherwise he would leave? So basically he will leave when the FA Market is best suited for him to make more cash. So then after reading this, I really think he is gone. Damn. :mad :

dolfinfan305
I remember hearing David "Sparky" Samson saying that if they couldnt get the tax break, that they would explore other ways they can come up with the money. I think the Marlins will stay at the end.
RossInfoMan
Talk about getting ahead of ourselves. We sure have a lot of Carnacs on this board.
Prime Time
I am willing to let the season play itself out, but I do not want to lose Lowell, I just thought it would be an interesting subject to talk about.
Ashley
Thats weird I remember b4 they aired one of the Braves games Mike said (not quoted exactly) "I love this team, i want to stay on this team as long as possible, i dont care about the money". Am i getting him confused with someone else, or did anybody else hear this?
Mabdul Doobakus
I don't understand why he would leave. He's not going to get a substantial raise, if he even gets a raise at all. And we're still contenders, last I checked. Our staff should only be better next year. What better situation is there for him? It's not like he HAS to leave if there's no stadium deal. Prime Time
Actually Mike could get more in a lot of other places. I do not see how you can say our staff will only get better next year? How do you know that? How do you know who we will lose to FA and get in FA?

How do you know that? How do you know who we will lose to FA and get in FA? well a full year of AJ is a whole lot better than half a year Scott Olsen and THutch will be closer to being promoted.... only Pavano is a realistic shot of leaving and Lowell wont be able to make that much more elsewhere.... Prime Time
A.J. Burnett could be gone. Gonzalez and his great defense could be gone. Conince could retire. A lot could happen.

Mabdul Doobakus
Beckett, Penny, and Willis should only continue to improve, and all will be here. Who can say about AJ, but, hey, he wasn't here last year, and we won a little thing I like to call the World Series. Cabrera will only get better too. This team doesn't really stand to lose any essential personnel over the next couple years... Pavano and AJ would be the worst of it, but I'd bet the Marlins hold on to at least one of them. I think we only have one more year after this of shelling out massive cash to Hampton, too...which should help the cap situation.

Am i getting him confused with someone else, or did anybody else hear this? the reason Mike loves this team is because this is a great team. with no stadium this team is gonna lose alot of players the next couple of years and revert backwards. I don't think Mike will still love this team then. i hate thinking about this crap. it's just depressing.
Marlins2003
I just got back in town and I may be wrong, but I think you're misinterpreting Lowell's contract. He is bound to the team for 2004, and "can" become a free agent, not "does" become a free agent. Mike may decide to stay with the Marlins if they are willing to continue to pay him the $8 million he would have earned.
