Stadium Announcement....

I did not see Samson sitting where he usually sits by Loria on Saturday and I did not see him there Sunday either. He's probably busy getting things ready for this week. Hopefully this stadium deal will become a reality and baseball can continue to flourish in South Florida.

Where do Samson and Loria usually sit? Those field-level seats right behind the net at home plate? If so, it's good to see them out there rather than in some luxury box. Yeah if you ever see a Marlins player in the on deck circle if you look in the backround you can usually see Loria sittin right there. Loria is always there, but I only see Paper Boy (Samson) like half the time.

how do you know jonnylon? do you have a friend in the negotiations?

*begins to look around with mischevious grin*

Unfortunately, no. Call it a 'gut' feeling though...

It is a fact that Miami/S. Fl is the 7th largest media market (and if I remember correctly, Boston is #6). MLB does not want to leave here plus all the potential to reach into the Carribean with this team (even though the Expos are playing in Puerto Rico).

I think something is being worked out.

It will be interesting to see how much the city of Miami holds the Marlins up for.

I'm sure everyone understands the price of stadium is going to be much more than the $325 million number. The city wants something in return for its $$$. The Marlins have to make sure they can run a profitable operation while fielding a competitive team.

May 6th is the operative date now so the city and county commisions count bless the deal.

Something may come out beforehand but it's going to come down to a handful of votes next week.

Marlins2003, explain to me this: I know that the May 6th is important for the stadium because Miami is voting on the issue, but is that rendered moot if Tallahasee shoots us down again? I mean if it's up to the state, I think we're as good as done for this year, but I heard rumblings that there was an outside chance that with or without the rebate we'd be able to build the stadium.

What's the deal?

I know EVERYTHING hinges on the Miami Arena being sold, but after that...?

We don't NEED the state rebates, but it would certainly help alot. We can always go on without them and move privately for that 60 mil, but it would be preferable for the state to chip in, since it is the Florida Marlins and they have given money to, among others, the Miami Dolphins (and owner Wayne H. :confused ), the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Philadelphia Phillies. Besides, we can always get the stadium done and go for the money privately, and if anything get the rebate next year.

Then why haven't we gotten our ass in gear for private financing. That's easier said than done, unfortunately...

My assumption, and everyone elses, is that they all go to Tallahassee (the city, the county, the Marlins) and try to forge some deal with the legislature.

It may be that the rebate doesn't start in '05, it starts when the stadium opens, costing the Marlins $6 million but netting them $54 million more than the day before.

OK, so it's a big fat maybe. I love it! :banghead

Why can't the Marlins ever map things out?

I don't think you appreciate how incredibly complex this deal is.

I don't think you appreciate how incredibly complex this deal is. No, I'm fully aware of how many things have to come together, but I'm also aware that up until a few days ago, they didn't even have a site to call their own.

Uncertainty certainly weakens any presentations made by the Marlins to the powers that be, and the Marlins asking for money while giving plenty of "I don't know" responses to the good ol' boys up in Tallahassee certainly didn't help. I completely appreciate this is a complex deal, but I also see that there was some ineptitude on the part of the Marlins. Samson and co. went in expecting a slam-dunk and they were left on their heels at the first sign of opposition; a clearly mapped out plan of attack on this may have resulted in better success, but I don't want to hijack this thread and turn it into a big war. Let's just hope the next week brings wonderful news.

The Marlins are in a hatchet fight without a hatchet.

The stadium can't be built without money from the City of Miami and so they are driving the bus. If the county could recapture those bed tax dollars that flow to the city they would, but they can't. The county wanted it out by PPS, which would have been terrific for a lot of the existing fanbase. But there wasn't enough money to do that and the PPS guys refused to be reasonable, so it was back to the OB.

Isnt this a great country where Sopher can buy a now-useless building that has millions in debt to paid off for many years for $25 million and not know what he wants to do with it? I know this has nothing to do with the stadium, it just struck me when I read the article on how much money is thrown around in this country.
