mongoose
The Marlins have a very good record- one of best in the league. We sit atop of our division and we, the fans, should be happy. We will lose games so deal with it. Focus on the big picture- making the post season. It stinks to lose but don't let it get to you. We will win more games than we will lose. Stay focused on the big picture and let's all have fun cheering on our team in 2004. Remember: Tomorrow is a new day; a new game. Go Fish!!! _
sheff#1
were only 2 games up ..should be more....OLIVER SUCKS!
Accord
Oliver doesn't suck, he just had a bad game. I'm wondering why Rosey or Jack didn't make a trip to the mound to talk to him after giving up the second homer in a row.

I've had enough with this guy, give Justin a chance to start. Oliver is consistent, he sucks every night.

His numbers speak for themselves: After last night Oliver has an 8.06 ERA and opponents are hitting .341 against him. You can draw your own conclusions. His numbers speak for themselves: After last night Oliver has an 8.06 ERA and opponents are hitting .341 against him. You can draw your own conclusions. ...and that happened in Coors. Sorry, but the numbers do not speak for themselves, comparing stats that were obtained at Coors field with stats obtained in other ballparks is nothing short of absurd, especially when you're trying to determine the quality of a pitcher. You do realize that Coors is the reason the Rockies ALWAYS lead the league or are close to the top of the list every year for team ERA at home, right? Pretty much any pitcher is going to take a beating in Coors, why don't people realize this? JP said it perfectly, 4 runs at Coors field is like 1 run at any other ballpark. Oliver is our 5th starter and is only going to be a starter temporarily until AJ comes back. He is a good pitcher for what he's getting paid and if Oliver ends the season at .500, he will have met and probably exceeded all expectations. DO has a career ERA that is something like 5.06 which is EXTREMELY good for a pitcher making less than a million per year and spent an entire season playing for the Rockies in Coors field. Sorry, but you simply cannot judge DO after seeing him pitch only a couple of games. He is a good cheap player. Why is it that everyone (or at least the bandwagoners) expects all of our pitchers to be of a Beckett caliber? It's simply UNREALISTIC to expect your 5th starter to be as good as your ace, 2nd, or 3rd. Expecting DO to be a massive force on the mound is like asking AGon to produce the same numbers as Cabrera on offense.
WildMarlinMan2003
Darren Oliver does not fit in on our team. I would much rather see a younger starter out there as our #5 like Tejera or Wayne. Oliver has a like a career 5 ERA. That isn't going to cut it.
MiRi
Tejera??? Uh.... I prefer Wayne.

Guest FishFanInPA
Oliver is awful...He's had the advantage of pitching there before..where he had an ahem....almost 5 era. Oliver was a temporary stopgap that isnt working. And no Tejera...I dont need him giving me heartburn anymore. Call up Howard or make Wayne the 5th starter! AJ hurry back! FreshFish
You are right, you can't win the all and this is not the last game that we will lose on the 8th or the 9th. However, I place most of the blame on the coaching decisions for last night lost. This type of loses can send a team into a tail spin for a period of time. We will see what this team is made of, if we rebound strongly tonite. Our bats are hots, all I asked for Josh is to pitch 8 innings and allow less than 4 runs and we will win tonight. When you adjust for park and league Oliver comes just a little below average (94ERA+) in career ERA, and he came off a 94ERA+ in 2003. The FO didn't make a terrible move here if only because Oliver was slated only as an in-season stopgap for an ace on the shelf. He's 33 now and has never been a strikeout pitcher which makes his chances of skill regression extremely high. A huge percentage of the time only power pitchers (exceptions like Moyer) do well into the later stages of their careers. Maybe Ollie is just experiencing his first major skill loss and we are on the recieving end.

Marlins2003
I wouldn't be surprised to see Jack flip Wayne and Oliver but for me, Justin seems comfortable, and is excelling, in his new role. He's pitching as well or better than Helling did for us late last season so I say don't rock the boat. If anyone moves up to start it will probably be Phelps. There's no one at Albuquerque (unfortunately) that's pitching lights out that you could bring up so I suspect things stay as they are. Why tinker with Wayne, if he is thriving on his new role. Phelps did wonderful for us last year as a 5th starter. I hope Oliver gets one more opportunity, if that. Flamarlins3
We probably only need 6-8 , more starts from the 5th starter. Give Oliver one more chance and figure out where to go from there. Phelps could be an option. Maybe Ben Howard. I don't know. BUt anyways you are right it isjust one game but in the past few games, our bullpen has really begun to scare me.
