May 2, 200422 yr He picked up save number 70 IN A ROW tonight. I don't think this is talked about enough, 70 saves in a row is IMO one of the most amazing accomplishments in the history of the game of baseball. Just wanted to point that out.
May 2, 200422 yr He's a pretty crazy guy too. Any of you guys read his conversation with Dan Patrick in ESPN The Mag?
May 2, 200422 yr Author he blew a save last year he doesn't hold the record The all star game doesn't count dodger hater. Don't hate the playa, hate the playa whose on steroids and cheating to set records. 70 saves in a row is AMAZING, and i mean wow, that's all I can really say.

May 2, 200422 yr he blew a save last year he doesn't hold the record thats like saying he blew a save in spring training. it DOESNT count genius.

He didn't gain 35 pounds of "muscle" on one offseason. And the all star game counts for NOTHING except home field advantage in the world series, which didn't seem to matter much last year.

May 2, 200422 yr He didn't gain 35 pounds of "muscle" on one offseason. neither did bonds. He did it over a span of 15 years And the all star game counts for NOTHING except home field advantage in the world series, which didn't seem to matter much last year. at the time, the Dodgers were still in contention. And home field advantage is a huge factor
May 2, 200422 yr Author neither did bonds. He did it over a span of 15 years My only response to that is :lol at the time, the Dodgers were still in contention. What does that have to do with anything? And home field advantage is a huge factor Tell that to the 2003 Yankees, or the 2003 Cubs for that matter, or the 2003 Braves for that matter.
May 2, 200422 yr neither did bonds. He did it over a span of 15 years My only response to that is :lol show me proof where he gained it all in one offseason at the time, the Dodgers were still in contention. What does that have to do with anything? It means it still meant something And home field advantage is a huge factor Tell that to the 2003 Yankees, or the 2003 Cubs for that matter, or the 2003 Braves for that matter.Of the last 9 world series, the home team won 7. And of those 7, the winning team probably would have lost 6 of them if they didn't have home field advantage
May 2, 200422 yr Author show me proof where he gained it all in one offseason Nah, i'll let you continue to be the last person on earth that thinks Bonds isn't on steroids and didn't have a huge weight gain in one offseason. After all, the world needs idiots. It means it still meant something Oh, alright, so the all star game meant something because the Dodgers were still in contention. Great logic. Of the last 9 world series, the home team won 7. A world series winner has yet to be determined directly by home field given to a certain league by the all star game. FACT. And of those 7, the winning team probably would have lost 6 of them if they didn't have home field advantage That's a matter of opinion, and yours clearly doesn't make sense very often.
May 2, 200422 yr so because it meant something to the dodgers means the game counts in the standings? hell lets add all the hits, homers, wins, losses to every players career stats then if the all star game means that much. jeez.
May 2, 200422 yr dont listen to FOX, the asg doesnt count wow what an accomplishment by the guy who makes dodger fans want to stay for the 9th random thought: dodger stadium is awesome
May 2, 200422 yr A few days ago I was orgnizing my basball card collection and I came across one that said some nondescript closer from the late eighties held the record for consecutive save completions. The number? 15. Fifteen! Seventy is just amazing.

May 2, 200422 yr he blew a save last year he doesn't hold the record could we get any more spiteful and dumb? I mean, he blew a save in spring training and winter ball...IT DOESN'T COUNT! _______________________ How amazing is 70? We really will not know until we can observe how long the record goes. If it lasts for 35, 50, or even 80 years (like a Dimaggio hitting streak, practically forever), then it is amazing. If Joe Nathan beats it 3 years from now, it isn't. Did Tom Gordon have the old record?

May 2, 200422 yr whatever Bonds blows but ... Gagne is the best closer ever ... only after 3 years of being a closer, he has become the best ever, even better than Ecks. and BTW i really dont think that Gagne is gonna blow one soon.
May 2, 200422 yr I really think that Gagne is great, but until he's this dominant for 8 or so years like mariano rivera, I will have to go with mo' in my unbiased opinion. Trevor Hoffman is also phenominal.

Trevor Hoffman is also phenominal. Very good point Soriano, Gagne is a great closer but things can happen and he could just be an abnormality and suck for the last few years of his career. If I had to take a closer right now though, it be Gagne. Mariano isn't getting any younger and as good as he is, he at most has maybe 4 years left in the tank. That still doesn't mean he is horrible, I'd gladly take either. The top-five closers in the game in my view right now are: 1st Tier 1. Eric Gagne 2. Mariano Rivera 3. John Smoltz 4. Keith Foulke 5. Billy Wagner 2nd Tier (Not in order) 1. Eddie Guardado 2. Ugueth Urbina 3. Armando Benitez 4. Troy Percival 5. Robb Nen (Just because he is injured) 6. Trevor Hoffman (coming off an injury) 6 on is where you start seeing the very good second-tier of closers that at times can be part of the elite closers but haven't shown enough consistency or been recently severely injured to do so.
May 2, 200422 yr Author This save record by Gagne will last for a very long time, whether it ends tonight at 70 or lasts until 100. This record in progress is very underapreciated right now, and that will be proven as this record lasts for a long time.
