June 2, 200323 yr Well the reason they released Williams and traded for Shea in the first place was because Williams is a horrible offensive player at this stage of his career. The Cubs don't exactly need a 3B, but an offensive producer. Lowell is currently the best offensive player on the market, that happens to play gold-glove like 3B. The Cubs are still after Mikey Lowell.

My gaurentee: Half the league is currently making offers to the Marlins for Mike Lowell, Derrek Lee, or Luis Castillo. The only way I see the Cubs signing Williams is if they can't get Mike, and even if they don't I still don't see much of a chance of them signing Matt...

Renck, Denver Post Sports Writer SAN FRANCISCO - If third baseman Matt Williams becomes a free agent as expected, he will look to the Colorado Rockies for future employment, according to his agent. The Arizona Diamondbacks designated Williams for assignment Sunday, leaving them 10 days to trade or release him. Williams has no intention of retiring, said agent Joe Longo, and certainly would welcome a call from the Rockies if he lands on the open market. "I think Matt would be very interested in them," Longo said of Williams, who batted .246 with four homers and 16 RBIs in 44 games this season. "He was very impressed in the first go-round last winter. But it's up to the Diamondbacks right now. We aren't allowed to negotiate." Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd confirmed that he is having ongoing discussions about Williams, but couldn't elaborate because of baseball's tampering rules. Clint Hurdle, the Rockies' manager, explained that conversations were serious enough to advance to a second stage. "He's been designated for assignment. It's like putting your car out in the front yard and saying, 'Make the best offer,"' Hurdle said. "There will be some other teams involved, too." Motivated to add depth and reduce their long-term payroll, the Rockies made a bid for Williams in November, piecing together a five-player deal involving Admin Walker and then-Diamondbacks first baseman Erubiel Durazo. Williams and Walker blocked the deal, but not before O'Dowd, Hurdle and team president Keli McGregor traveled to Scottsdale, Ariz., to talk to Williams. Williams, who has known O'Dowd since 1997 when both were with the Cleveland Indians, said at the time that the meeting went well. Williams, a divorced father with custody of his three children, invoked his no-trade clause, citing his unwillingness to uproot his children. But that isn't expected to be an issue now since they are out of school for the summer. The Chicago Cubs could also have interest given manager Dusty Baker's ties to Williams. "Matt is one of my favorite guys. It's a matter of how he can play and how much he has left," Baker said. Because of Williams' enormous salary - he's making $10 million this season - and his power to nix any trade, the Diamondbacks may elect not to use the 10-day window given that it is unlikely another team would assume his contract. June 2, 200323 yr Well, that's because he was on a team then... No, there is one huge thing nobody has touched on (I believe), that will ultimately sway his decision. He has children who lived with him (he is divorced) in Arizona. That is why he rejected the Colorado deal initially too. Now that he is released and has no choice but to move, who knows.
