June 17, 200322 yr The rumors aren't a three-way deal with anybody nice try Fillet Brain. Its nice to see your act about the team hasn't changed. Again who do you pull for? Why are you here? Anyways the deal is the Marlins DON"T want to trade Lowell to get the help the team needs(bullpen) both now and in the future. So they are trying to move salaries like Lee. The rumor deal is Lee and a player(prospect) for Benson and 1B Randall Simon( didn't he play for the Marlins?) The deal could get bigger if Florida throws in Penny and Pittsburgh includes one of those top minor league pitchers (LHP Sean Burnett who probable be a top that wish list for the Marlins). Pittsburgh is trying to get more power to help Giles and Kendall in the line-up. The Marlins want Benson because I think they want to move Pavano to the bully. Pavano would become the top long guy for the fish when Beckett comes back. Plus Pavano I think he's a free agent this year or next. Don't take this as gospel but my facts are shaky at best.
June 17, 200322 yr what did Ramp say yesterday? that's right.... DLee and someone for Simon,Benson and prospects(i didnt say the prospects).... hey about Sourbeck instead of a prospects?...he is an awesome reliever
June 17, 200322 yr Pavano is a FA after 2004... And I would welcome that trade. I don't know Simon's stats but I have heard good things, and both him and Benson for Lee would be great. The question is: How could we afford them? And because that question has to be asked in this deal, it gives away that this deal WILL NOT happen...
June 17, 200322 yr Okay Ed (and no this isn't a trap), explain to me what the Marlins see in a pitcher with a 5.00 era, 81 innings and 99 hits not to mention a couple dozen walks? What's the attraction to this guy who seems so pathetically mediocre for someone making $4.3 million this year? I just don't get it. Enlighten me.
June 17, 200322 yr I guess the only thing would be that he's back from Tommy John... usually guys who comeback have a rough start then improve...
June 17, 200322 yr Could someone post Simon's stats? .268/6/37 Full Stats He's a great bad ball hitter...
June 17, 200322 yr I think Pittsburgh might need Florida to take on Benson's salary if they would have any hope of signing Derek Lee. The Randall Simon thought isn't bad at all though. It would be a great way to deal Lee's salary and still come out with some offense. Simon's shown some pretty good offensive ability. Nowhere near Lee's defense, but he's only making 1.5 million this year. I'd rather not take Benson though. 4.5 this year, 6 next year. It would probably mean one of our starters would be dealt. Benson's one of those guys people keep waiting to fullfill his potential and become a frontline starter. *Last year Simon hit .301, 19 homers and 82 RBIs. One problem is he flat out refuses to take a walk, so hit on-base% is only .320, yet he doesn't strike out much either. Opposite of Lee, who walks and strikes out a ton. Plus he's a lefty.
June 17, 200322 yr http://bigleaguers.yahoo.com/mlbpa/players/5903 hes always been a good hitter, a solid 280-300 avg though he lacks the power and speed of lee.
June 17, 200322 yr I dont like this deal. I think it will hurt the fish, they should find someone else to make the deal with or something.
June 17, 200322 yr Benson is now in his second full year back from the surgery. He is pitching like crap. I dont want him.
June 17, 200322 yr Author IMO Benson could be a diamond in the rough. Benson is coming back from Tommy-John and it takes a well(a year at best). He could become the pitcher everybody thought coming out of Clemson or not. The salary thing is what I think is in question. The Marlins might have Pittsburgh take some of that salary to make the deal or add more to the pot as far as prospects. Like I said its fuzz with the details but that all I could think of right now. Do I like the deal as is? NO I would try and pull LHP Sean Burnett out of them in the case Benson doesn't work out.
