With eye on first, Fish face Expos

Florida (48-47) at Montreal (34-61), 7:05 p.m. ET

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

Securing a split at Philadelphia on Thursday positions the Marlins to salvage a winning road trip.

That didn't seem possible after getting swept in three games at Pittsburgh to start the 10-game, four-city road swing.

Now, the Marlins are 3-4 on the trip with the first of three games set for Friday at Montreal.

The Marlins have won three of four after holding off the Phillies, 10-8, on Thursday. Florida pulled to two games back of the Phillies and Braves in the National League East.

Right-hander Brad Penny faces the Expos for the third time this season, and he seeks his second win.

Of Penny's 48 career victories, 11 are against the Expos. Home or away, Penny has fared nicely against the divisional foe. At Montreal and in Puerto Rico, Penny is 5-1 against them.

Penny opened the season at 6-2 with a 2.12 ERA, but since then the right-hander is 3-5 with a 4.47 ERA.

The Marlins are 10-9 when Penny takes the mound.

  • Against Armas, Juan Pierre is 6-for-10 with a double and triple. Pierre had three hits Thursday at Philadelphia. Pierre added two stolen bases, marking his first two stolen-base game since May 30.
  • Mike Redmond connected on his second home run, both coming at Citizens Bank Park. The shot to left field ended an 0-for-22 slump.
  • Brad Wilkerson needs two more home runs to reach his career high of 20. He hit one out of the park against Mets pitcher Tom Glavine on Thursday.
  • Against Penny, Montreal's Jose Vidro is 12-for-38 (.316).

"If we got any kind of hitting here [Wednesday], we would have had two wins. We like playing in here. We like to come in here. Good chance to get [Miguel] Cabrera out and a good chance to get Luis [Castillo] out. If you can't take them out with a seven-run lead, then we are in deep trouble."-- Manager Jack McKeon on splitting at Philadelphia and lifting Cabrera and Castillo with a 9-3 lead

Quick Hits:(Credit: Joe Frisaro / Special to MLB.com)

Dontrelle Willis pinch-hit for the fifth time, and struck out. The D-Train is now 2-for-5 as a pinch-hitter.

Carl Pavano's 5 2/3 inning stint Thursday was his second shortest outing. On April 21, Pavano lasted 5 1/3 innings in a no decision at Philadelphia.

Abraham Nunez was in an 0-for-15 stretch before his RBI single in the sixth.

Brad Penny's eyes light up when he sees the Montreal Expos.

Penny will look to continue his dominance of the Expos when the Florida Marlins open a three-game series at Olympic Stadium.

Still very much alive in the NL East race, the Marlins will be counting on Penny down the stretch. The right-hander should put Florida in position to even its 10-game road trip at 4-4 on Friday. Penny, who has 48 career wins, is 11-3 with a 2.19 ERA in 16 starts against Montreal.

He's been extremely effective on the road against the Expos, going 5-1 with a 1.88 ERA in seven starts.

The Marlins have won three of four overall, including a 10-8 victory in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Alex Gonzalez and Jeff Conine each hit three-run homers, and Mike Redmond added a solo shot, helping Florida move within two games of the Phillies and Atlanta for the NL East lead.

The Expos are just happy to be going home. Montreal finished its six-city, 28-day road trip with a 10-15 record following a 4-1 win over the New York Mets on Thursday.

Tony Batista hit a tiebreaking two-run homer off John Franco in the eighth inning that sent the Expos on their way. Brad Wilkerson added a disputed homer for the Expos.

``Thank God it's over,'' Wilkerson said of the road trip. ``We did a pretty good job, but I'm happy it's over because it takes a lot out of you.''

Montreal second baseman Jose Vidro has had good success against Penny in his career, hitting .316 (12-for-38).

The Florida Marlins face the Montr?al Expos tonight!

Vont Les Marlins !

Go Marlins!

Armas's ERA in his last 3 outings--1.59. Good stuff, an arsenal of pitches (Five) and uses all of them. When hes healthy which he hasnt really been since 2002 he has the potential to be an ace for the Spos

well folks....it looks like im goin to the Sillies game again tonight...and tomorrow....that will make it a record five straight baseball games attended by moi.

This should be a good pitching matchup. Armas has been pitching really well as was pointed out earlier and Penny always dominates the Spos.

I have the same problem here in Fort Myers. In my trip to Disney, I was able to hear the two Philly series games on AM 660 in Orlando and 560 actually made it up fine to Orlando on Wednesday Night. I was listening in the Honda's car radio.

I can do one of two things, either A) go to my moms resturaunt, in altamonte springs, which is only about 10 miles away from my house, and they get PAX w/ marlin games. Only thing is, i dont have a car to drive back home, and my mom gets out of work arounf 12, and i want to see the bourne supremecy at around 10ish...

Or, i can just listen to the radio....which aint too big of a problem.
