August 6, 200422 yr Unabashed Racist Leads Tenn. GOP Primary GOP Write-In Candidate Losing in Bid to Stop Racist in Congressional Primary in Tennessee The Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. Aug. 6, 2004 ? An unabashed racist will represent the Republican party in the November election for a congressional seat after a write-in candidate failed to derail his effort. With 86 percent of the primary vote counted Thursday, write-in candidate Dennis Bertrand had just 1,554 votes compared to 7,671, or 83 percent, for James L. Hart, a believer in the discredited, phony science of eugenics. In November, the GOP candidate will oppose Rep. John Tanner, a Democrat who has represented the northwest Tennessee district for 15 years. Hart, 60, vows if elected to work toward keeping "less favored races" from reproducing or immigrating to the United States. In campaign literature, Hart contends that "poverty genes" threaten to turn the United States into "one big Detroit." "I didn't expect to win," Hart said. "I thought their network would beat my ideas." He has run for the 8th District seat before and drawn little attention. But people began to notice this time because he was the only Republican on the ballot. Since the deadline for getting on the ballot had passed, Bertrand, also a Republican, began a write-in campaign, saying he wanted to protect the party's honor. "I think his beliefs are not beliefs of any party that I know of," Bertrand said Thursday night. "I knew it was going to be a really long shot, but in good conscience, I had to at least give it an attempt." Bertrand, a financial analyst and former military officer, was on active duty with the National Guard when the deadline to get on the primary ballot passed. Hart said he will have lots of time to campaign for the general election since he was forced Wednesday to resign from his job as a real estate salesman because of the attention he drew during the primary. "They didn't say 'You're fired' in exactly those words, but it was pretty clear what they wanted," Hart said. While campaigning, Hart sometimes wears a protective vest and carries a .40-caliber pistol, but he said he has run into no trouble. "When I knock on a door and say white children deserve the same rights as everybody else, the enthusiastic response is truly amazing," he said. If a black person opens the door, he says he simply drops off campaign literature and leaves. :plain LINK

August 6, 200422 yr The scarier thing is this guy has support. Im sure someone will defend him or at least change the issue to someone on the left being much worse. Id like to see what percentage of the vote he gets.
August 6, 200422 yr *making kids as she types before it is too late* 498415 Little too much info there lina...
August 6, 200422 yr here's the scary thing..... what would it say for the people of this district if he wins?
August 6, 200422 yr Author He won't win against a 15-year incumbent. 498428 :plain I hope you're right... I don't want my kids neutered like pets.
August 6, 200422 yr And we keep saying "Never again!" All I know is if he and his whackjobs get power, I'm getting it from two sides (Jewish and autistic). But I have a feeling that I won't be needing to make aliyah soon. If Bush continues his crap, I may begin to think about it more (while my parents file for medical guardianship for even thinking about it).
August 6, 200422 yr There is an unabashed racist already in Congress for the Dems....his name is Robert Byrd and he is from West Virginia. He was the Majority Leader once and has gotten in trouble several times for comments including calling Bill Clinton a "white n****r" on Fox News Sunday.

August 6, 200422 yr this shows all the people that think that racism is dead just beause its been 40 years since the civil rights movement that racism is still very much alive and doing well.
August 6, 200422 yr I wonder how Condi Rice, JC Watts, Alan Keyes, and Colin Powell feel about this guy? :confused
August 7, 200422 yr The scarier thing is this guy has support. 498412 Well it's in Tennessee, whaddya expect? All of those god-forsaken "deep south" states like the Carolina's, Tennessee, Georgia, etc. are all incredibly racist places. I lived in North Carolina for 5 years, it's a hell hole and I feel sorry for all of the non-white and non-christian people who live in those horrible states. Racism is alive and well, especially in the deep south and people in these places will go out of their way to make you aware of it, it's pretty disgusting. It would be career suicide for any politicians who endorse this moron, he has no chance of getting the seat.
August 7, 200422 yr Holy s*** that is amazingly stereotypical. I'm a firm believer that the South doesn't breed more racists than the North, or the North more than the West, etc. Racism is prevalent everywhere, but there will be more racism towards black displayed in the South because there are more blacks (per capita) in the South. I lived in Tennessee and my family is from there...I didn't experience ANYMORE racism than I experienced when I visited Boston for a week (seems people HATE Hatians and Brazilians up there). Yah, the dude might be racist, and he might have support, but that does NOT mean that Tennessee is "more racist" than the rest of the states. And for your information, Tennessee is not the "Deep South". Think of the Deep South as the states that seceded first (SC, GA, AL, MS, etc.)...not the states who seceded because Lincoln attacked Southern states (the states that seceded last were TN, NC, VA, AR). I live in SC and don't notice ANY more racism than when I visit places up north. I'm not saying there isn't racism in SC...b/c it's everywhere.
August 7, 200422 yr Doesn't the deep south consist of these states? Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas?
August 7, 200422 yr Major problem is that our constitution defends racism. (Not in terms of hiring/firing and such) but verbal racism and nonviolent displays are and SHOULD be protected. not b/c i think its good but b/c its a double edge blade, freedom of speech and expression also includes things we may not agree with.
August 7, 200422 yr Cape...it depends on what part of Florida. North Florida, Panhandle, middle Florida (no, not Central Florida)....that's deep South. You can try arguing to me that Pensacola, Lake City, Suwannee, etc. are not deep South...and you will lose.
