gain 1 game a week on Atlanta....that is the goal.

501446[/snapback]

Just need to gain a game a week on those Bravos, or one every other week and go 5-1 against them the rest of the way. If we take care of our business we can do it! When you just win, good things follow. Before we can go on a 10-0 run we need to with #4 tomorrow, get rolling to school them Cards! Bunch of potential playoff teams on the horizion, good time to remember how to work them brooms!

Lo Duca might be on first tomorrow :confused

Means no hot Niner then :thumbdown

What will Trader Jack do? :mischief2

Willis tries to put broom to Brewers

Milwaukee (51-58) at Florida (55-54), 3:05 p.m. ET

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

After blanking the Brewers, 5-0, on Saturday, the Marlins seek their first sweep since taking four straight from the Phillies back on July 26-29 at Pro Player Stadium.

The Marlins moved one game over .500, but still remain seven games back of the first-place Braves.

"We can only blame ourselves," said Jeff Conine, for the team being in a catch-up position. "We played so poorly for quite a while."

Now the Marlins are looking to get rolling.

Left-hander Dontrelle Willis seeks to follow up a solid six-shutout inning performance by Ismael Valdez, who won in his Marlins debut Saturday.

Willis claimed a victory in his only career start against the Brewers, giving up three runs in 6 2/3 innings last June 11.

As always, the secret to Willis' success is his control. The left-hander has tempered his high leg kick and established one arm slot. Of late, it's paid off as the D-Train has issued three walks over his last 33 1/3 innings. He hasn't allowed more than one walk in his last five starts dating back to July 6.

Manager Jack McKeon won his 900th career game on Saturday, and strives to build on that number.

Saturday marked the ninth shutout by Marlins pitching, tied for second in the league with the Red Sox and Astros. Atlanta paces all clubs with 10.

Players to watch

Conine, who became the Marlins' all-time grand slam leader Saturday with his fifth, signed the home run ball and gave it to the Marlins Community Foundation. Conine is 6-for-13 in his last three games. ... Mike Lowell, in the midst of a 2-for-24 slump, was given a day off Saturday. Lowell, the franchise's leader in runs batted in, is one RBI away from reaching 500 for his career. Lowell also holds the team record with 130 home runs.

Quotable

"On the inside, yeah, but not on the outside." -- Conine when asked if the grand slam trot is different than a regular home run trot.

Quick hits

McKeon is now the seventh active manager to reach 900 victories, joining Tony La Russa, Bobby Cox, Joe Torre, Lou Piniella, Art Howe and Dusty Baker. McKeon has won 130 games with the Marlins, 215 with the Royals, 71 with the A's, 193 with the Padres and 291 with the Reds. ... Paul Lo Duca was kept out of the lineup Saturday to rest a bruised left ring finger. Lo Duca may also be given Sunday off. ... The Marlins Wives Back to School Drive will continue on Sunday. The wives will be at Gates B, F, G and H collecting school supplies that will be donated to children in need through the SOS Children's Village. ... Kwame Jackson of the hit TV show The Apprentice tossed out the ceremonial first pitch Saturday. Jackson is a friend of Marlins general counsel Derek Jackson, who previously worked for Major League Baseball in New York City. "My [baseball] career peaked in the sixth grade," said Kwame Jackson, who was sporting a black Marlins jersey. Jackson says Donald Trump, star of the show, would make a terrific baseball owner because of his business knowledge and his publicity skills.
