September 7, 200422 yr U.S. calls for diplomacy with Chechens By Barry Schweid Sept. 7, 2004? |? WASHINGTON AP -- The Bush administration differed Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that only a political settlement could end the crisis between Russia and the breakaway region of Chechnya. The administration also left open the possibility of U.S. meetings with Chechens who are not linked to terrorists. .... ... ... In an interview Monday with a group of foreign journalists and academics, Putin rejected Western calls for negotiations with Chechen rebel representatives, Britain's Guardian and Independent newspapers reported. ??Why don't you meet Osama bin Laden, invite him to Brussels or to the White House and engage in talks, ask him what he wants and give it to him so he leaves you in peace?" the Guardian quoted Putin as saying sarcastically. ??You find it possible to set some limitations in your dealings with these bastards, so why should we talk to people who are child-killers?" Putin said foreigners should have ??no more questions about our policy in Chechnya" after the attackers shot children in the back, and said the Chechen cause was aimed at undermining all of southern Russia and majority-Muslim regions of the country. Boucher, the State Department spokesman, said Tuesday that ??our view on the overall situation has not changed." That is, he said, ultimately ??there must be a political settlement" over Chechnya. He said U.S. officials had met with Chechens with a variety of views in the past, although ??we do not meet with terrorists." There may be additional meetings in the future, though none are planned, he said. Responding to Russian suspicions that the terrorist group that seized the school in Beslan included Arabs with ties to the al-Qaida terror network, Boucher said the Bush administration did not have any definitive information.?
September 7, 200422 yr the us is not occupying saudi arabia (osama's country) like the russians are occupying chechnya. they've been doing it for a long time, murdering their women and children for decades and decades. they always forget to tell that side of the story.
September 7, 200422 yr i think that what the chechens did was a terrorist act and it was wronged. but russia has brought that onto itself for the way they have treated the chechens for 200 years.

The Chechens are terrorists, just as Al Qaeda is, and they must be dealth with accordingly!

September 7, 200422 yr if they work taht way the chechens themselves will cooperate against terrorism. they'll become and ally instead of an enemy.
September 7, 200422 yr I like this approach, clean your hands of this no one wins war that Russia got themselves into.
September 7, 200422 yr wait wait wait...whatever happend to the global war on terror Bush pledged? I thought all nations were now united to fight "terror." Ah the value of pure rhetoric. The pictures are simply horrific. This is utterly and totally unjustifiable. These men were pure animals.
September 8, 200422 yr wait wait wait...whatever happend to the global war on terror Bush pledged? I thought all nations were now united to fight "terror." Ah the value of pure rhetoric. The pictures are simply horrific. This is utterly and totally unjustifiable. These men were pure animals. 546209 Who do you fight then? The Russians or the Chechans? Both are terrorists, his move is the one for the best interest of the United States.
September 8, 200422 yr Please explain to me how the Russians are terrorists? The collateral death of civilians? Wouldnt that make the US terrorists too since civilians died in the invasion of Iraq?
September 8, 200422 yr Chechyn terrorists have no organization. Even less then terrorists in Iraq. Russia can, should, and probably will eliminate terrorists within it's borders, without our help.
September 8, 200422 yr and how do they go about doing that while at the same time convincing Chechnya not to desire independance?
September 8, 200422 yr They can't convince Chechnya not to desire independence. But they can kill the terrorists. Which I thought was the issue.
September 8, 200422 yr  Um, its a little more complicated than that. As long as Chechnya desires independence, their will be people willing to stretch the tools necessary to gain it. Dont you think Russia has been trying to get the terrorists? Its the methods they feel are proper in stoping terrorists and terrorist activity that the US has problems with. Everyone is in line that terrorism and terrorists should stop. But its the plan and necessary implications that everyone differ on. Its just plain and green that its not as simple as saying "get the terrorists."
September 8, 200422 yr Author place is so devastated from war..... at this point the place seems to be led by terrorists, gangs, warlords, and radical muslims who want to create an Islamic state. whomever the latest president is, just hopes he won't be assasinated in his first year. the people have basically been radicalized by decades of mistreatment, I can't see the Russians giving Chechnya what they want at this point. They'd be afraid that other territories would want the same thing. Also there's the oil issue... Does the administration not consider these to be terrorist acts? Chechens have been arrested in connection with the 2 airline crashes. Chechens led to the deaths of over 300 children in this latest incident. They've been one of the biggest hostage-takers of the past 2 decades. I'm certainly not defending the way Russia has treated them. Stalin shipped the Chechens off to Siberia for having collaborated with Hitler. Basically just dumped them there & estimated 100,000 died in the move or within the first year. After the Soviet breakup it's just been a matter of Chechnya wanting independence & Russia not wanting to grant it. It's the old "are they terrorists or are they freedom fighters" argument, but when you start taking schoolkids hostage, sorry you're terrorists.
September 8, 200422 yr I can only imagine the furor here if Russia tried to tell us how to react after 9-11.
September 8, 200422 yr I can only imagine the furor here if Russia tried to tell us how to react after 9-11. 546794 we're doing exactly what you would like the US to do....encourage diplomacy and peace talks with MURDERERS! (i.e. Iraq)
September 8, 200422 yr yeah...thats it..spin the hypocrisy by saying they are doing what liberals want them to do. Pick a side fishfanpr. Either say Bush is wrong or say this is the right action to do. Can you? The difference between this and Iraq is a difference of temporal degree and of ACTUAL EVIDENCE LINKING THE TWO. But its a lot easier when operating with pie in the sky concepts. Hey, should we fight bad folk?
September 8, 200422 yr President Putin who might end up becoming a dictator in the near future is a Gangster. His sarcastic remarks to U.S suggestion was just GANGSTER.

(i.e. Iraq) 546932 I just vomited in my mouth because of that. Read a book every now and then and you might (probably not) realize the immense complexity of the world. American Idol kills brains.
September 8, 200422 yr Author Russia can, should, and probably will eliminate terrorists within it's borders, without our help. 546561 not as if they haven't tried.
September 8, 200422 yr the part that's sad about this is that the russian state has been as cruel, or maybe even more, than those they are now calling terrorists and the world is crying out for. yet, when the russians murder the chechens you only hear silence. whoever said that history is written by the winners is right.
