October 11, 200421 yr MLB T-shirt riles Red Sox fans By Associated Press | October 11, 2004 BOSTON -- On the eve of a Yankees-Red Sox playoff series, Major League Baseball on Monday tried to extricate itself from the middle of the teams' legendary rivalry by recalling a league-sanctioned pro-Yankees T-shirt that rubbed Red Sox fans the wrong way. The message on the shirt that drew fans' ire reads, "Hey Red Sox ... Who's your daddy?" The shirt bears both a Yankee logo and a picture of a red pacifier with the letter "B" on it -- a not-so-subtle reference to Sox ace Pedro Martinez' recent remarks after a loss to their archrivals: "Call the Yankees my daddy. I can't find a way to beat them at this point." Major League Baseball began offering the shirt for wholesale distribution to league-licensed retailers over the weekend and promoted it on a Web site selling league-sanctioned clothing, said Carmine Tiso, a spokesman for the New York City-based league. On Monday, the few thousand shirts that were produced were being recalled from retailers, and the shirt was removed from the Web site. "We did hear some feedback from the Boston fans, who didn't necessarily feel they were comfortable with the T-shirt and the message on it," Tiso said. "Some fans felt it went a little too far, and obviously in this instance we're listening to our fans." Although most league-sanctioned apparel promotes individual teams without denouncing their rivals, the content of messages on league gear has previously touched on some of baseball's rivalries. It comes at a time when the storied rivalry is at a peak with the teams meeting in a best-of-seven American League championship series starting Tuesday in New York -- a repeat of last year's matchup that left the Sox fans reeling after a come-from-behind victory by the Yankees. The T-shirt inflamed those passions. Boston.com?s fan site -- BostonDirtDogs.com -- posted information about the shirt on Sunday night and invited Sox faithful to vent their anger by contacting league offices. On Monday, Boston.com invited fans to submit their own Sox-Yanks T-shirt ideas. By late afternoon, the site had received more than 600 responses with suggested pro-Sox, anti-Yankee slogans -- many of them referring to this season?s Yankees-Red Sox brawls, the Yankees' hefty payroll and other sore spots. ? October 13, 200421 yr The problem they had with it was that it was offical mlb merch. The unofficial shirts sold here on the streets around Fenway are worse.....it's been the subject of some newspaper articles this season. Some Sox fans are ticked off that in order to get home they have to walk their kids past vendors yelling about their vulgar T shirts referring to the Yankees' sexual habits.
