Once again, Berardino pees on the party

Featured Replies

I know this would never work, but it seems the Marlins are getting a lot of support overall from Palm Beach County...maybe build the stadium there? The supposed baseball-crazy Hispanic population in Miami has done nothing to make this franchise successful. Seems to me they are as apathetic as any other kind of people there.

Yawn.

Sorry, but Berardino is just throwing out there what is true to most casual fans in SOFla.

But what's funny is how people react on the board when anyone writes something negative. Berardino could do no wrong three months ago, now he's the anti-christ.

And all that tells me is that he's relatively objective. He will praise, and he will criticize, it's what he's there to do.

And posting wild theories about why Berardino is critical of the marlins is laughable. If Berardino's thoughts are indicative of an ulterior motive, than isn't every single media personality down here guilty of the same thing at one time or another?

It'd be different if Berardino was out on a lmb, and the only one saying these type of things. But almost every single paper,, baseball anaylist, talk show host sports

and sports media outlet is saying the same thing.

Look, it's ok to disagree with him, or anyone else. But use facts to dispute his claims, not hair-brained conspiracy and innuendo. And as far as I can tell so far, there isn't a shred of evidence, a plausible theory, or a realistic schemne that would contradict what Berardino has said.

Ok, time for everyone to respond and flame me out....Say I'm negative, not a fan, whatever. BUt at least include some facts in your malicious responses in order to establish some type of dialog.

the problem fillet is that bernardino is not really throwing facts at us.

Yeah, you are right. I guess almost every single authority and anaylist in Baseball has it wrong and a bunch of subjective fans on a Marlins' fan site have it right. I guess you all are drawing on your years of reporting and/or playing the game on the MLB level to draw your conclusions.

for all i know, he might be as biased as i am, maybe more. and i got reasons to believe he's biased.

Fillet, look at my response to it (2nd post in the thread) and tell me where you disagree with me.

Berardino was nice enough to respond when I emailed him at least.....but it was predictably sarcastic and I was disappointed he didn't address a single point I made to him. Response was something like, "Thanks for writing, be sure to avoid a healthy dose of perspective at all costs." I didn't rip him in the email, just wanted some reasoning behind it. Guess he couldn't come up with anything. (Not that he's obligated to really)

Yeah, he works for a company that is a subsidiary of a parent company in an unrelated industry in a different market. What a smoking gun!!! All this is is the business world's version of the 6 degrees of seperation. I bet if you researched any major paper they are related in some vague, obtruse way to something they are reporting on. So then...all media is biased I suppose?

Yeah, I beleive that long before I beleive that he's just opinionating on what everyone thinks is actually going on. Turn on a TV, read a paper, surf the web. I bet it's 80-1 the columns that say the same thing as opposed to those who think the Marlins are in it for the long haul.

I wonder if you all will sing the same tune when Castillo, Lee and half of the club are shipped out. Then again, you probably will, since apparently this new version of a FO (which has an atrocious track record) is a braintrust.

Just keep on ignoring the FO's history and the current facts as they exist in today's baseball climate. That way it'll be even more amusing when you all are shattered again as the trades start happeniing.

and what makes you think that's my reason to think he's biased. real smart fillet. now go back to the frying pan.

How about this? Judge each incident on it's own merits. Plenty of times when Berardino or any other writer has ripped the front office, it's had PLENTY of validity. This one does not.

Forget about Cape's conspiracy Tribune theory for christ sakes.. I can't believe you'd spend a whole post on it.

its has been said on this forum a ton of times by almost everyone that we dont mind trading lee, penny or even castillo so long as we keep lowell, lowell is our first priority and we can build around him...it seems like FO will do that, so we wont cry when lee and penny and luis are gone...we have already accepted that (look at all the posts on lee and luis and penny trades).........by the way...i think filllet owes an apology, or atleast and admitance of being wrong....didnt i recall him saying we would get swept or loose this series to the braves........ :whistle ;) :D

Yes, I did think the Marlins would lose the series.... It's been a very pleasant surprise for me. I just hope the rain holds off tonite so they can make a run at the sweep.

And as for Castillo, Penny and the rest of the "One-Year Boys", and the effect a Lowell signing would have...Yes, I think you'll be looking at another Brewers down here with one high priced player and no one else around him.

But even if you allow (which I don't) that Lowell will be here next year, I cannot look at a lineup for next year and think that the team will be as competitive as it is this year without several key players staying.

All in all, like I said before, this is much ado about nothing. The Marlins will trade Lowell in the off season before arbitration when he won't sign a low-ball deal with them. I just hope that the Marlins' leverage in trade talks at the end of the season is close to what it is now, allthough I can't imagine that happening.

I think we need to E-Mail Mike and Dan and tell them to be men and face the fans here on the site. See what our opinons and insight are. Maybe they'll get more of an optimistic attitude...

I have to give Le Batard props, the man can write. But I just don't like Mike. He isn't that great of a writer. At least Le Batard says what he writes are opinions, when Beradino tries to pass opinions off as facts...

Hey, anything is possible. You want more info on my Tribune theory, then visit http://www.trb.com

I just think that Mike got a pie in the face by management this year several times and got mad. He lost his "exclusive" writer status and started a vandetta as punishment, but he is only hurting himself. Unless the owners do anything against what they have promised, Berardino is the villain.

Sorry Cape, but this theory is even farther out there than the first about the Tribune. What you are accusing him of is tantamount to professional suicide. If he were ever to assume a personal vendetta against any player, organization etc.. He would be reduced to writing obituaries in the MooseJaw Saskatchuan Daily Bugle in no time flat.

Besides, he has ample oppurtunities to vent his frustrations on the Marlins' professionalism without staining his journalistic integrity. Ever hear him rip on the Marlins' for being bush league when he's on Goldberg's show? Perfectly acceptable b/c it's a different format and forum.

Regarding The Cubs, The Tribune Company and the Sun-Sentinel

Cape, let me try to explain to you why Mr. Berardino's work has no effect on the value of the stock of TRB.

TRB does over $ 5 BILLION a year in revenue. The Cubs hardly represent a flyspec on the balance sheet. I just went through their annual report, the Cubs get minimal play because they have minimal impact. They own the stadium, they pay rent only to themselves, and while (on paper) the Cubs don't make money, bringing Mike Lowell in isn't going to make even a tiny bit of difference.

It would be one thing if the Cubs were like the Marlins, with no one in the seats, but the Cubs have SOLD OUT EVERY SEAT FOR 20 YEARS. There is no additional revenue to be derived by bringing in a Mike Lowell, they've already got every seat sold.

Do you understand? They could never sell enough Mike Lowell memorabilia, shirts etc to pay his salary. The only reason they wanted Lowell was to win, NOT TO IMPROVE THEIR BOTTOMLINE.

So, please put this theory of yours to bed, it's factually incorrect.

I KNOW THAT MARLINS2003. It was just a joke. There is no reason or excuse why Berardino should be so negative, unless it is one of the out there theories I stated.

If all of you are so in tune with Berardino, then explain to the rest of us, why he is being so negative? The Palm Beach Post and Herald aren't being anywhere as negative as him.

Actually he should be on tomorrow I think...we'll see what he has to say about it.

No the Herald is just as bad. The beat reporters are fine, but when the opinions come out, hoo boy....

No the Herald is just as bad. The beat reporters are fine, but when the opinions come out, hoo boy.... Opinions in the Herald are presented as just that, the Sun-Sentinel keeps placing Berardino as beat reporter/columnist for the Fish.

The Herald beat stories are numerous and generally positive because they are based on the play on the field, the Sun-Sentinel Beat stories are few and far between compared to the Herald.

These "columnists" complaign that the baseball business is all about the money, etc, but when a team makes a commitment to a player, they try to make it seem as the team is lying and going to use it only as a PR ploy. The Alou and Floyd situations did not have a press release made about them. Alou didn't meet some requirements and Floyd was not helping the Marlins win.

Mike Lowell is one of the main reasons we are one game over .500 This ownership has done us nothing wrong, yet the press unfairly attacks them claiming to be the bearers of the truth. I would expect the attack articles if they went back on thier word. They all said Lowell was as good as gone by July 31st, and now they must eat their words, and they cannot admit they were wrong and say so. Instead they change the direction of the attacks to a conspiracy that won't happen.

I know this would never work, but it seems the Marlins are getting a lot of support overall from Palm Beach County...maybe build the stadium there? The Palm Beach Post is seeing things objectively, they will keep Lowell, but may deal Castillo and Lee if we fall out of contention.

The Local Writers make it seems as all is doom and gloom and they will use this as PR ploy to make Lowell lower his price and then not sign him if he doesn't claiming that he was too expensive.

It's funny- the columnists complain about Marlins attendance being so far down, yet they continue to bash the product, causing fans who read to think "this team stinks, I'm not going to watch." Do these guys REALLY want baseball to succeed in South Florida? Because they sure don't sound like it.

oh, the answer they'll give you, time and time again, is "it's not our job to market the team." (which is certainly true)

I don't think most of them care whether baseball succeeds down here or not though. They'll have something to write about either way.

It's 100% true that they are under no obligation whatsoever to "talk up the team" or make things seem rosy when they're not. However, to pretend that their reporting doesn't have an effect on the local support of the team is laughable.

Actually it seems like Juan Rodriguez has become the Sentinel's Marlins beat reporter this year. I rarely see MB write about the games anymore.

I should send an article in to the Post, and see if they print it. They seem to be the only positive paper...
