October 29, 200422 yr Any Marlin fans wondering how Atlanta will make their team worse again for 2005 and then embarass us all by winning the division? Does anyone here know if the Marlins are actually planning the to perhaps attempt to make their team better in 05 to stop this nonsense. I don't see any other team looking to improve. We all know the Senators(Greys?) probably won't be doing much, Philadelphia is always destined to fail, and the Mets, well they have Kaz Matsui, enough said. Being most of the World Championship players are still on the team Loria might actually be able to make a contender if he opens his wallet and aquries a "Pudge Rodriguez" of 2005. Anyone know whats in store?
October 29, 200422 yr I'm not too optimistic about what ownership will do this offseason. I'm hoping they do the smart thing and let Pavano go and don't offer LoDuca and Alex Gonzalez arbitration. They should spend that $13 million saved on some quality middle relievers and a good OF or 1B.

Gonzalez is under contract for 2005. And first base is the least of the Marlins worries. So much for idea of what the "smart thing" is.

October 29, 200422 yr Gonzalez is under contract for 2005. And first base is the least of the Marlins worries. Having a 1B that can't break an .800 OPS (Conine) is a HUGE worry, when your lineup is full of average-to-below-average offensive players (and no I'm not including Lowell or Cabrera in that remark). It's no wonder why the Marlins got shut the f*** down during the stretch run.
October 29, 200422 yr and who do u suggest we replace those 3 players with... 603741 You could replace Gonzalez and LoDuca with practically anyone. LoDuca wasn't much of an improvement over Redman. Considering the guy made $4 million, is arbitration-eligible, and is probably one of the most overrated players in baseball - I say cut him and sign Doug Mirabelli or Damian Miller for half that. Or double it and do what they should've done last year and spend the money on a catcher that's worth it - Jason Varitek. Also, how hard is it to replace a shortstop that can't crack a .700 OPS or even a .300 OBP? You don't pay multi millions for that kind of paltry production, I don't care how good his defense is. Pavano just isn't replaceable, even with Pavano himself. The team will just have to look for improvements from Beckett, Burnett, and Willis to make up for the loss of Pavano, or they can gamble on Derek Lowe or Jaret Wright for a little less money than they would've had to pay Pavano this offseason. If I had to honestly choose, I'd take Derek Lowe at $5-6 million/year over Pavano at $7-8 million/year despite the year that Lowe had.
October 29, 200422 yr Author I wouldn't touch Lowe. He has been one tier above garbage his entiee career and will command too big of a contract because everyone knows his name and he had a lucky post-season. (See Josh Beckett)

October 29, 200422 yr I like the Braves, but they always choke. It sucks, but thats life. Oh yea, about that gonzo loduca thing.... SO WRONG. gonzo is practically the best we have in defense. his plays are stunning.
October 30, 200422 yr Braves will ALWAYS choke because they never have power pitching - something you need to win in the postseason. Example A: last year's Marlins. Example B: Red Sox. You have to have guys that can get the strike out and force hitters to swing at bad pitches. That is how you control games. Now, AGon is not all that bad. Sure, he hits about .230 but he has solid power numbers. Sure, less K's would be nice, too. But he gives us gold glove D. And unless the Marlins are planning on trading AGon and signing Cabrera, I dont see much of a reason to change things there. Conine is not the problem at 1B. He hit pretty well down the stretch - the whole team kind of got blown out and exhausted. 3 double headers in 20 days. No day off for 27 straight games, if I remember all that correctly. We had to ask a lot of our starting rotation and throw in a 6 starter to make up for the double headers. Tough to overcome. The Marlins could benefit a lot by keeping this team intact and adding a Lowe as a #4. They also have some assets to play around with. Stay tuned - this team is going to be pretty good going into next season.
October 30, 200422 yr Also, how hard is it to replace a shortstop that can't crack a .700 OPS or even a .300 OBP? You don't pay multi millions for that kind of paltry production, I don't care how good his defense is. I realize Gonzalez is an enigma at the plate. The usual standard for measuring his performance really doesn't apply. Did you realize that Gonzalez had the most RBIs of any NL SS? And from the back of the line up? Did you realize Gonzalez had the most HRs, by far, of any NL SS? Gonzalez can get real hot at times, and totally bewildered others. My take is we need someone other than Bill Robinson to bring out the consistency in him. One of these years, Gonzalez is going to break out....could be this year.
October 30, 200422 yr Russ "Twinkies" Ortiz filed for free agency :whistle 604129 Just a formality....they all file for FA.

Ohh.... and then theres sea bass. When can you replace the best offensive and one of the best deffensive SS with anyone? hhaahhah your post was a complete joke
October 30, 200422 yr And I hate to point this out, but.... Redman = Mark Redman (Lefty pitcher from the 03 team) Redmond = Backup catcher

October 31, 200422 yr Mark Redman & Mke Redmond & Prentice Redman: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=230910121 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=230927128
November 1, 200422 yr i was watching a braves biased baseball show on CSS at they siad ortiz is most likely gone. the owners will stay with the same amount of payroll # wise. if the yanks fail to acquire beltran the braves might consider trading andruw jones to the yankees for bernie williams. jon thompson and jared wright are also big ifs. smoltz to some extent is a problem for them.
November 1, 200422 yr i stopped reading right there. did you forget gonzalez was offically the BEST offensive SS in the NL? By what measure was Gonzalez "officially" the best offensive SS in the NL? Offensively, he was crummy. His OPS might have been about average for a SS, but his OBP was atrocious. Those homers he hit kept his offensive production from being completely in the toilet. Edgar Renteria and Nomar Gariciaparra pwned him offensively.
November 1, 200422 yr I wouldn't touch Lowe. He has been one tier above garbage his entiee career and will command too big of a contract because everyone knows his name and he had a lucky post-season. (See Josh Beckett) WHAT? I wouldn't call the 2.58 ERA over 219 innings in '02 "one tier above garbage" nor the 2.63, 2.56, and 3.54 ERAs he racked up as a reliever from '99 - '01. '04 has been the only terrible year he's had since he was a rookie in '97.
November 1, 200422 yr SO WRONG. gonzo is practically the best we have in defense. his plays are stunning. There are plenty of good-field/no-hit SS in the minors that we could replace him with for the league minimum salary. You don't pay $3 million+ for a guy who can't hit. That doesn't make economic sense.
