Keeping Pavano

I think 4 years $32 million backloaded contract would be fair. Maybe $5 or $6 million next year.

I wouldn't mind this contract, but certainly not backloaded.

$21M is plenty to live on, and even retire on (if he wanted to). He doesn't need to live like a king, just to play where he is comfortable.

Come on man, that's just as bad as Sprewell saying he can't feed his family when he's getting paid 10 million a year :lol .

608341

what sprewell really said that, what a jerkoff...there people out there that bust there ass of for 14,000 to 20,000 a year and can feed there kids...this guy makes millions playing basketball and says he cant feed his kids...what an a**hole really i just lost all respect for this guy...

Yep, Sprewell is making 14 million a year in the last year of his contract and the T-Wolves offered him a 10 million dollar a year deal and Sprewell said that he was insulted and that he can't feed his family on that .

I'll try and find an article...

I think 4 years $32 million backloaded contract would be fair.? Maybe $5 or $6 million next year.

Ooooooooooooooooh my, no.

He'll get that, certainly, but if we backload a deal that prorated pays him $8 mil annually, we're going to have to be 10000000000000% positive that he'll be worth that much for the length of the deal, because otherwise, he's untradeable as a $13 million pitcher in his final season.

I don't think we can or should shoulder that burden of a big-backloaded deal to an unproven pitcher.

608336

I don't know where you got 13 million from but I was thinking something along these lines.

1st year- $6 million

2nd year- $8 million

3rd year $9 million

4th year- $9 million

We've seen how important starting pitching is this last year. We had one of the worst offenses in the majors and still managed to make a run at the playoffs. A great starting staff guarantees you playoff contention.

It's the only way we could get it done. Remembe Pudge and Hampton's contracts come off the books next year.

hmm, I'm seeing the same atitude here from last year when 3/21 was the most we should have offered Pudge.

I thought they definitely should've offered him more and should've done what it took to sign him. Unlike Carl, I-Rod was a proven commodity. If he was willing to sign a deal that was voidable after 2 years if he got injured, then I don't see the problem the Marlins should've had with giving the guy $9-$10 million/year for 4 years.

Then we shouldn't git 'er done.

That contract offer guarantees that 'Mando is 100% out the door, and that our offseason is pretty much over after that. I have no problem with Pavano, but a contract of that size becomes an albatross around our necks.

Thanks, but I'll pass.

HOWEVER, he WILL sign for at least that much whereever he ends up going.

Now, if we were to give him 3 years/$21 million, with about $1 or $2 million in incentives (IE: 20 wins, sub 3.5 ERA, CY Young, etc) I'd be ammenable to the contract heading into the $8 or $9 million range, but no way can we ever justify giving guaranteed money of that magnitude to an unproven player.

Mando's gone any way. It would be ignorant for a small market team like ours to go out and spend $5-6 million a year on a closer. Our team has been built around our starting pitching, and it's imperative that we keep it that way. Pavano is the best available pitcher out there. You can say all you want about this being his first good year. He has always had the talent and he had some solid years before this year, but what I saw from Pavz this year was a guy who had turned the corner mentally and made himself into a top of the rotation pitcher, and that mental aspect is not going to go away.

add a couple more mil ... maybe 3yr /$24-25 and it will be up to his actual value

I see the 3/21 as a good start ... but hopefully not a final offer

This deal is the best one possible for the Marlins. If he accepts, it is a fair price, if not he can shop elsewhere.

Earlier this year Livan Hernandez, a similar pitcher to Pavano, signed a 3-yr $21MM extension. Livan is older, but is recognized as a consistent solid starter and his local income tax rate is 10% (DC, much higher in Montreal.

So, yeah, it's a fair offer. Will he be offered a better contract? Of course. This year's free agent starting pitching class is weak with a lot of contenders (6 of the 8 playoff teams) looking for help.

I don't know I want him to come back. On one hand with Valdez also a free agent, Beckett and Burnett's injuries, an npredictable Willis and no one exceptional in the minors we'll need a solid starter. On the other hand we've seen many average and below-average pitchers put up numbers with the Marlins thanks to Pro Player and the defense and could use the money to improve other parts of the team such as the offense.

I like the idea of incentivizing the contract if we have to sweeten the pot. Good way to make it a win-win....reduces our risk, gives Carl the opportunity for the $$$ he make get elsewhere, and keeps him motivating to perform at the top of his game. It also gives us the ability to backload the contract to a degree and still keep it attractive for other teams in later years if we need to make a trade.

I hope they don't go much higher.

this guys sucks he just had 1 good year i would get mad if the marlins blow 7 mill on this a**hole who thinks hes good :banghead

It'd also be ignorant for a small-market team to shell out all that cash on a guy that is coming off his only good season in the Bigs. I think he has turned the corner personally but I wouldn't bet 30+ million dollars on it.

Actually, Livan is not similar to Pavano. Livan has a track record of success that Pavano doesn't have.

So, yeah, it's a fair offer. Will he be offered a better contract? Of course.

It's way more than fair.

im skeptical on him staying. I hope but if he doesnt, we better spend the money on someone who can replace him. Jose Lima would be awsome, but his tag may b too pricey.
