I'm not sure the Fish could or should offer anymore. But he is going to be one of the most expensive players on the market. He's going to get some bigger offers, in terms of years and money.

I have to say that I was impressed when I read about this offer. Given the team's situation (financial and otherwise), I thought this was a fair offer. It wont be enough, but it should be enough to fend off anyone who says the Marlins didn't try to keep him.

Anyway, I think it's a fair offer and I'd be upset if we go over that amount in an attempt to keep Pavano.

 

That said, we've shown that we're willing to commit $21 million over the next three years to the team...if Pavano doesn't take it (which he won't) that money has to go to other parts of the team, if not, I'm going to really have a hard time accepting it.

I think this is where the marlins start their offer, but once he rejects it they might go a little higher. They wont be able to pay him that much this year, but the next two years we would be able to pay more because that 10 million wont be tied up anymore. Maybe the deal could increase to 9 per year for the other two years. 3year 25 mil deal is very fair.

That's all I want the marlins to offer. No more. If he doesn't accept his loss. Maybe 3 years at 24 million but no more. What about 4 years at 30 million? with heavily backloaded.

It's an opening offer. I would think the Marlins would go a little higher in the end if they feel they have a shot at keeping him. It's like dealing with a car salesman, you are going to go lower than the most you'll pay at first.

My thoughts exactly.... Prove yourself for a few years, then you can come back and ask for more money. One good season should not mean a player is entitled to a big contract. If that was the case, Geronimo Berroa would have gotten himself a multi year deal many years ago.

He'll get that, certainly, but if we backload a deal that prorated pays him $8 mil annually, we're going to have to be 10000000000000% positive that he'll be worth that much for the length of the deal, because otherwise, he's untradeable as a $13 million pitcher in his final season.

 

I don't think we can or should shoulder that burden of a big-backloaded deal to an unproven pitcher.

He's prob gonna get 10 mil a year somewhere.
