November 16, 200421 yr Pavano may be near to leaving BY CLARK SPENCER cspencer@herald.com The courtship of Carl Pavano is in full swing, with a dozen teams expressing initial interest in the free agent pitcher and the Philadelphia Phillies jumping into the fray with a formal contract offer. Although Pavano's agent said a deal likely won't be completed until December, the Marlins' chances of retaining the right-hander appear to be remote. Scott Shapiro, who represents Pavano, is going ahead with plans to visit teams that have shown the greatest interest. First stop: Boston. ''We're going to be heading to Boston very quickly because [Red Sox ace Curt Schilling] is in town, and Curt wants to meet with Carl,'' Shapiro said. Pavano met last week with New York Yankees manager Joe Torre. The Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles are also expected to enter the bidding for Pavano's services. The Marlins offered Pavano a three-year, $21 million contract that probably won't stack up to the deals he's expected to receive from other teams. Pavano is sounding much like a player whose days as a Marlin are done. ''I'm sure going to miss the beat writers,'' Pavano joked Monday with reporters before teeing off in a charity golf event. ``The preference is to be somewhere where I know I'm going to win.'' USING CAUTION Mike Lowell and Jeff Conine are cautious about the Marlins' chances next season, especially if the team fails to retain Pavano or free agent closer Armando Benitez. ''I don't think there's enough without getting someone else,'' Lowell said Monday. But I'm sure [the front office is] working on things. Said Conine: ``It depends on who they replace them with.'' General manager Admin Beinfest said he has made offers to other free agents, but none of those players is believed to be high profile. ''I think that, given our [payroll] thresholds in the past, we have not pursued huge-dollar guys,'' Beinfest said. Beinfest said he has not received payroll parameters from owner Jeffrey Loria. ''It's not keeping us from doing anything,'' Beinfest said. THIS AND THAT ? New pitching coach Mark Wiley plans to review videotapes of starters Beckett, Burnett and Dontrelle Willis before going into spring training. ''I hope I can help those guys get to a point where they're really what they want to be and what everyone else wants them to be,'' Wiley said. ? Long-time bench player Lenny Harris said he expects to be with the Marlins in spring training. He said the team has already given him an offer to return next season. ? Conine said he expects to be at full strength for spring training after undergoing postseason surgery on his ailing right shoulder.

He's been on this team far less, he became a success in Teal, has been offerred a more than reasonable contract...if he leaves he leaves an unappreciating A-hole.

If we don't pick up someone else and have to put in Phelps yes...it would be huge but there are plenty of arms out there and Beinfest will land a more reasonably priced player.
November 16, 200421 yr At this point, if Pavano comes back, so be it, if he leaves, fine, as long as we spend that money we offered on someone to replace him and an offer to 'Mando. However, I pray that Pavano being available into December/January doesn't handcuff what we do for the rest of the off-season: IE, emptily pursue Pavano by "leaving the deal on the table" and neglect all the other FA's, letting them sign with other teams and then lose Pavano. I hope Pavano signs with whoever he's going to sign with soon, or even better, so we can totally vindicate ourselves from this man, offer him the max of what we're willing to go (I may vomit, but if it's 4/$32, so be it) tell him he's only got 72 hours then it's off the table, and then we either have him, or move on.

There is no one to blame things just arnt gonna work out financially. Also whoever said 3 years 21 Mil is a above average offer is either drunk or just insane that will be well below what he signs for.
