My 5 Steps To a Playoff Team

Featured Replies

- Resign Imael Valdez ( 5th starter )

- Sign a good starter since Pavano wont be back such as Perez , Wright, Leiter, Mulder, etc.

- Give Mota a shot at closer if it doesent work out make a trade later in the season for another closer

- Sign a proven set up man we cant count on spooney or fox coming off injury to be 100 percent and blow away batters

- Trade Castillo and some minor league talent for a big bat....sorry Luiy ur a great player but theres no need for a Pierre and Castillo on the same team...let easley take over at 2nd base WE MUST IMPROVE OUR OFFENSE

If we do all this I think it would give us the best shot at being a playoff team

I hate the idea that all of you are gettting about trading Castillo. The Pierre-Castillo combo brought us a WS ring. Why break them up?

no need to acquire an extra set up man and assume mota fails

mota is a bona-fide set up guy, but i don't think he has the mentality to be a closer

Luis-JP got us the WS in 2003...doesn't mean they can do the same in 2005. Fact is we need another bat to be able to compete for a playoffs spot. Whether it be signing Magglio to a one year pudge type deal or trading Luis. We need someone.

We just need to sign another solid bullpen man and I will be feeling pretty good about the pen for next year.

I agree on the starter thing

i'd much rather trade pierre.

we'd lose less (if you take into account that he's a defensive liability), and we'd get more in return since he's overvalued for his leadoff abilities, imo.

i agree with you, though, that we don't have any need for two slap hitting leadoff guys.

Why not trade for Urbina now?

We know that the price of a closer about triples at the deadline so why not save our depleted system some more trauma and just do the deal now.

Three simple steps (Valdez being resigned is assumed):

1) Trade for Urbina

2) Sign Pavano (with Benitez gone, we can afford to overpay a little)

3) Get a lefty specialist for the 'pen.

That's it, that's all we can expect to do, and that's all we can get. It'll take a career year from, at the very least, Encarnacion and Lo Duca to get us into the playoffs, but we've always known that guys have to outperform their contracts for us to be in contention.

The Marlins will defnitely have to up their offer to sign Pavano.

Urbina is very available now, but prospects will have to be given up. The Tigers aren't going to trade Urbina just for the sake of trading him. Percival is not always healthy, and he would be a good backup plan at closer.

Don't take Urbina now, who knows what is going to happen to his mom, he might go home and miss considerable time if something happens.

More time Urbina is away, the less leverage the Tigers have. But with just one year left on his contract, I doubt the Tigers feel any pressure to move.

You do not improve the offense by replacing Castillo with Easley. Not one bit.

a castillo trade could be worth it but i dont think easley is capable of playing an entire season at 2B at this stage in his career. we`d need to get another guy - how does our farm system look for immediate infield replacements?

You must be kidding :whistle

WTF, Luis is the only patient guy in this lineup (besides Pierre). We had a problem last year with sorry pitchers going into the 8th against us. Luis always makes the pitchers work big time, you get rid of that patience in the lineup and will have Casey Fossum pitching 10 innings games against us.

Not to mention the GG defense.

STOP ALREADY WITH THIS LUIS TRADE TALK!!!

You guys underappreciate what this guy does.

:mad :

- Josh Wilson, whose injury in the Arizona Fall League may have influenced the Marlisn to re-sign Easley and Lenny Harris

- no one. Andino hit for a high average without plate discipline or power.

What?????????

While Luis' base stealing ability has somewhat lessened, he is a defensive machine and an excelent hitter.

JP is one of the premier leadoff hitters in baseball. teams would kill for him and his defense is excellent (except for the arm).

Do not blame the poor offense of last year on these two players. We lost the rbi's of Lee and Encarnacion (he had a good year in 2003).

Lowell also had a pretty awful year.

We had enough bullpen problems last year, let's start of this coming season with a solid pen.

I agreed until here. How do you figure you'll improve the offense by trading one of the better hitters in it?

And let me get this straight, we're going to trade the only two guys outside of Alex Gonzalez who seemed to give a f*** at all what was happening on the field last season between May and August?

You guys amaze me sometimes.

Both Luiy and JP slipped this year. Just look at their numbers. Perhaps that was because they did not have Pudge and Lee batting behind them, but there's no doubt they regressed a bit.

And Encarnacion did not have a good 2003. He hit poorly. His RBIs mean nothing. It's a team stat. Player gets high RBI totals from A. hitting with lots of men on base, B. hitting well and C. playing a lot. In the case of Encarnacion, he did two of the three in 2003. He played a lot and batted behind Pudge, Lee and Lowell (all .350-380 OBP guys), but hit a measly .262 w/ runners in scoring position. So unless we get the same production out of Lowell-Cabrera-Conine that we did from Pudge-Lee-Lowell, it's not fair to suggest Encarnacion will bounce back. He was never there! He's an 'all-tool' talent missing the two most important tools: contact hitting and plate discipline. You can slug like Aaron, run like Pierre and field like Mays but if you have the plate discipline and hit like Josh Booty, you're never going to decent major leaguer.

Both Luiy and JP slipped this year.

Huh?

Pierre's numbers almost accross the board were better in 2004 than 2003. Better total hits, more HRS (lol), triples, BA, OBP, OPS, SLG all were up in 2004. Yes he stole less but otherwise the guy had one helluva year.

Give us a break.
