Marlins offer Pavano arbitration

Carl Pavano was offered salary arbitration Tuesday by the Florida Marlins, who still have at least a sliver of hope that their best starter will return in 2005.

The Marlins announced the move moments before baseball's midnight deadline for extending arbitration invitations to free agents. Teams that did not make offers cannot re-sign free agents until May 1; those with offers have until Dec. 19 to accept and through Jan. 8 to re-sign with their 2004 clubs.

Pavano - who was 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA in 2004 for Florida - was in Seattle on Tuesday, continuing his tour of visits with potential suitors; he's already met with Baltimore, Detroit, the New York Yankees and world champion Boston Red Sox, and plans to sit down with Anaheim officials later this week.

It's unknown if Pavano will consider Florida's arbitration offer; his agent, Scott Shapiro, was having dinner with Mariners officials late Tuesday night when the Marlins announced their decision.

"I'm not in a position to comment at this time," Shapiro said when asked about the offer.

The fiscally challenged Marlins offered Pavano a $21 million, three-year deal weeks ago, but he's expected to command significantly more on the free agent market. Florida says it has lost more than $38 million over the last two seasons, and its 2005 payroll isn't expected to grow much from this year's $53 million mark.

By offering Pavano arbitration, Florida ensured that if the right-hander signs elsewhere that it would likely receive a supplemental first-round pick and possibly a second-round selection from whichever team lands him.

The Marlins also offered arbitration to pitcher Ismael Valdez, who was 14-9 with a 5.19 ERA last season. They did not offer arbitration to infielders Mike Mordecai and Wil Cordero, plus relievers David Weathers, Chad Fox and Josias Manzanillo.

Marlins general manager Admin Beinfest was not available for comment Tuesday and will not specifically address the team's arbitration-day decisions until Wednesday, a club spokesman said.

Pavano is coming off the finest of his seven major league seasons, one where he set career-bests in wins, ERA, innings (222 1-3), strikeouts (139) and shutouts (two).

Florida may soon add another starter; the team and former Marlins pitcher Al Leiter, who spent the last seven seasons with the New York Mets, could officially strike a deal as soon as Wednesday.

Leiter, 39, pitched for the Marlins in 1996 and 1997, throwing the franchise's first no-hitter in 1996 and going 11-9 for the next year's World Series champions. He was 10-8 with a 3.21 ERA in 173 2-3 innings for the Mets in 2004.

Another former Marlin, free agent reliever Antonio Alfonseca, is also believed to be in the team's plans for 2005. The team has had conversations with Alfonseca, but no deal has been finalized.

Lenny Harris, the team's most-used pinch hitter in 2004, signed a minor-league deal last week and was invited to spring training - but the Florida roster will have a decidedly different look next spring.

The Marlins lost relievers Armando Benitez and Rudy Seanez, plus backup catcher Mike Redmond to free agent deals this offseason.

Benitez, who saved an NL-leading 47 games in 51 chances and led all relievers with a 1.29 ERA in 2004, signed a $21.5 million, three-year deal with San Francisco. Seanez signed a $550,000, one-year deal with San Diego; Redmond got $1.8 million for two years from Minnesota.

So long Mordy, Manzy, Chad 'The Yellow Dart' Fox, and Dave. Thanks for the help!

Good ridance, Cordero.

And I'm beyond pleased they offered Ish arby.

Yeah, Valdez and Pavs was a smart move. We will land only one...and no, I dont think it will be Pavs.

Don't be so negative...IMO the Marlins will up there offer to around 8 to 8.50 a year and add a forth year. Both sides will give a little :thumbup

Well, I originally thought (some will say foolishly) that Pavs would return. I almost banked on it. But with all the attention he recieved, it is hard to believe that the Marlins will get him back. Maybe adding Leiter will make our situatiion more enticing to him from a winning stand point. I would LOVE to see Pavs and Leiter round out that rotation. And we offered Valdez arby, too. But, I dont want to build my hopes us. Been doing that too much these days.

have a little faith..that's all... the team will go into the winter meetings this weekend with Carl's deal being at the top of agenda list.

News about the whole Chad Fox thing..

Not tendered arbitrations offers were: relievers Chad Fox, David Weathers and Josias Manzanillo, and infielders Mike Mordecai and Wil Cordero.

By not offering arbitration, the Marlins lose all rights to negotiate with -- or sign -- these players until May 1. The likelihood of any of these players returning is remote.

Fox, though, is worth watching.

The 34-year-old reliever, who was a key pickup down the stretch in 2003, was expected to be the primary setup reliever this past season. But elbow inflammation resulted in him appearing in just 12 games in 2004.

He has enjoyed a great relationship with the Marlins, and has an open invitation to sign a minor league contract. Fox said recently about six teams have shown interest, including the Astros.

He expects to throw off a mound in January. If he doesn't sign a Major League contract before May 1, he could find himself giving it a shot with the Marlins sometime during the season.

dont say good bye to Fox yet..who knows what might happen to him...could be a good midseason pick up if he is healthy..

I liked Valdes when he was around last year, I thought he made a good 5th starter. It's better than having an inexperienced pitcher from Single A starting.
