December 12, 200421 yr For all of you fish fans worried about losing Pavano, I wouldn't. He had 1 good year, and it was in his contract year! For what he is going to make its not worth it!
December 12, 200421 yr he has improved every year over the passed few but yea, the owners did overrate him
December 12, 200421 yr ive said it all along. he will never match his 3.00 era again. he might hit 18 wins cuz he plays for the yanks but hes not worth over 10 mill like hes gettin, i wouldnt even give him more than 7.5.
December 12, 200421 yr Yeah, I also think he may be overrated. Just look at his career stats. He is only a .500 pitcher. Well see if this season was a fluke next year....
December 12, 200421 yr He has improved every year, pitched well in the offseason, and won many big games last year. But still, he's getting overpaid. But that's the climate right now.
December 12, 200421 yr this is probobly because we lost him to the much-hated yanks... im sure if we would have gotten him back, you wouldnt be sayin this... :whistle

December 12, 200421 yr Look, 80% of the players out there who get fat contracts I'd look at it and say "wow, that's overpaying". You simply have to overpay most of the time when you're going after a hot free agent. It's the nature of the business.
December 12, 200421 yr For all of you fish fans worried about losing Pavano, I wouldn't. He had 1 good year, and it was in his contract year! For what he is going to make its not worth it! 632720 There's no doubt in my mind that he's overrated. The Yanks are out of their minds to pay him over 10 mill per year for 4 years. But Pavano is a good guy and he deserves to be able to rip off a team like that. This is actually good news guys. Pavano will be one of the Yankees starters, and even though the Yanks have a lot of money, they might not get a GREAT starter out of Pavano, when they should be able to get 5 GREAT starters with all their money.

For what he is going to make its not worth it! 632720 He isnt overrated. They saw the talent this kid has to succeed in the future. He has great control and has ALWAYS given signs of getting better. Even the year before his 18-8 record he had alot of solid starts.
December 12, 200421 yr I don't think he's overrated, but I don't think he's worth the money he's getting. I've said it a hundred times, but I believe a player should not be given such a big contract until they have shown that they can produce these kinds of numbers for at least 3/4 years.. Make a name for yourself and then request a big contract.. I think Pavano has shown great improvement over the last couple of years and I really don't think it's a fluke, but I still believe he should have to prove himself a little further before being paid this much.
December 12, 200421 yr Pavano's overrated, and the only reason I really wanted to keep him was to send a message to our guys (AJ, Beckett, Lowell) that we're here to win, and that we're not letting any of our own leave. Granted, Pavano wasn't "ours" but he was a Montreal product and Loria's boy, so you see the connection. Either way, it doesn't matter, we knew we never were going to be able to keep him once he said those six dreaded words: "I'm keeping my options open." I may be alone when I say this, but the money doesn't scare me with pitchers anymore, it's the length. $10, $12, $15 million doesn't matter to me as much as giving it to them for four-five years does. That's how the Mets and Rockies got sunk very very quickly: bloated long contracts that never paid dividends. Personally, I'd have no problem giving Pavano $10 or $12 million for 2005 as a one year thing, but then again, I'm not an owner.
December 12, 200421 yr pavano's good, but other than 2004 he's never had an era lower than 4 for a season where he's thrown more than 100 innings. he's very skilled but he doesn't have overpowering stuff, and he doesn't solve the yanks' lefty shortage. and rumor has it that NY fans have a way of turning on overpaid players when they don't live up to the unrealistic hype...

For what he is going to make its not worth it! 632720 He also had an awesome 2003 postseason. Beckett hasn't done what Pavano has, yet Beckett is given the benefit of the doubt. Some of you guys are terrible homers.
December 12, 200421 yr I hope he has the same kinda season Ponson had after signing a new contract. :shifty
December 12, 200421 yr since he will be a yank, i do not wish him the BEST. i wish him good. he is overrated, he didnt always have good stuff.
December 12, 200421 yr If Pavs is overrated then every pitcher besides Curt Schilling is too. The Marlins gave him a great offer and a team with more money gave him more.

What has he really done outside of the month of october?

I still had hope for Anaheim :banghead

Here is something to chew on - Pavano's K/9IP is 5.63. That is terribly low and considering he is now going to pitch in the AL and doesnt have JRS's dimensions behind him, I think the Yanks overpaid. Just to give some perspective, DTrain's K/9 is 6.35. Justin Wayne is 5.51. Pavs is getting $10M a year for Wayne-like K's. I know that isnt the only way to evaluate Carl, but it is certainly a telling sign that he wont be as productive in the post season as you would like at that price and even possibly during the regular season. He will get offense though.

What has he really done outside of the month of october? 633824 as if winning in october isn't a big deal. the kid's been injured, what do you want him to do? his first season (when he was called up in september), the end of 03, october 03, and the end of 04 show what he is capable of. so you don't think once beckett puts together two straightt healthy seasons like pavano just did he won't be winning 17-22 games and posting a sub 3 ERA? he hasn't done anything outside of october because he hasn't gotten the chance. i think he's determined to make 05 different, and i think he'll have a breakout year. i predict 18-20 wins and an era of about 2.6-2.8.
