July 11, 200322 yr I'm not fond of the galleon, but the Billy's Beach sounds like a great idea... We are doing some creative brainstorming here... Why do you hate my galleon It would be the coolest thing in any ballpark out there hands down. The galeon just doesn't fit the image of the "Marlins"... Maybe the Pirates... But I do LOVE the beach idea... People laying down towels to watch the game on grass in center field sounds like a minor league thing.
July 11, 200322 yr cannons? we arent the pirates or buccaneers So What! :banghead Marlins are ocean creatures, Galleons with cannons sail the seas. What's wrong, not like the Pirates are going to care. If they get to be the Miami Marlins, then I want my Galleon/Beach in CF. :cool
July 11, 200322 yr keep dreaming It's all about the dream. What do you have against my Galleon, not like it can hurt anyone. Keeps the sea theme going.
July 11, 200322 yr I like the idea of having the Marlins sign light up when we win or hit a homer. Another possibility would be similar to the Apple at Shea (but much nicer) in which there's a Marlin that shoots up over the Marlins sign when we hit a homer or win. i like that idea
July 11, 200322 yr Marlins flying out of hats...how scary for small children. I don't think it would be such a good idea, the sound of cannons shooting from a galleon is unique in baseball. Hehe -- I don't think I conveyed my idea properly. We're probably having different mental images. I'll work on a Photoshop in my spare time of what I'm talking about and base it on the images of the proposed Bicentennial Park.
July 11, 200322 yr Stadium talk angers Dermer Miami Beach mayor concerned that tax fund could be tapped BY BARRY JACKSON AND NICOLE WHITE bjackson@herald.com A renewed buzz to build a state-of-the-art baseball stadium for the Florida Marlins has already angered one South Florida official. Miami Beach Mayor David Dermer says he will fight the latest push by the Marlins to build a new stadium if the team seeks money from Miami-Dade County's Convention Development Tax, saying it would end up costing his city. His reasoning: An agreement between Miami Beach and Miami-Dade would give Miami Beach $50 million May 1 if money raised by the tax is not pledged by Dec. 1 for the stadium. ''Obviously, this is of great concern to me, and I'm going to be very vigorous in fighting the matter,'' Dermer said in a telephone interview. The Convention Development Tax is a 3 percent surcharge the county levies on revenue earned from events at the Miami Beach Convention Center, such as this week's NAACP convention. The total collected by the county varies each year. The tax generated $25.6 million in the 2002 fiscal year, an 18 percent drop from 2001, according to the county's Finance Department. On Wednesday, Miami City Manager Joe Arriola told The Herald that Marlins President David Samson said he would be willing to contribute $100 million toward a proposed retractable-roof stadium in downtown Miami. Samson has not confirmed or denied that. The city would be interested in collaborating on the project, Arriola said, if the Marlins put $100 million into the pot. A stadium could be built for $325 million, Arriola said. Any contribution from the Convention Development Tax would pay for only a small fraction of construction. Most of the tax money is pledged for other projects. The Marlins want to move from Pro Player Stadium because they do not get to keep much of the stadium revenue, including money generated from luxury suites. In late May, Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas told The Herald that he had not ruled out using some of the convention tax money to help finance a baseball stadium. But such a decision would need the approval of the County Commission. On Thursday, Javier Soto, Penelas' chief of staff, declined to say whether the tax fund would be tapped for use on the stadium. But he did say there have been no recent negotiations between the county and the Marlins. Still, Dermer said he's concerned. The city has discussed using money from the tax to expand its convention center. ''I don't believe Miami Beach's money should be going to build a baseball stadium,'' Dermer said. He has long complained that too much of the funds generated by the Beach, such as the convention tax and the resort tax, are spent on the west end of the causeway. New article in today's herald.
July 11, 200322 yr MDC and all the cities in it are so freakin' corrupted it's unbelievable. THe MIami Beach default allocation of 50mil is just another great example of how much of a debacle it really is. Get the Marlins out of that hole and bring em' up to Broward.
July 11, 200322 yr no galleon Cape. It's been done and it has nothing to do with the Marlins. A sailboat maybe, I dunno... I hate gimmicks anyway. Just make it a gorgeous stadium with a nice view over the outfield wall & I'll be a happy camper.
July 11, 200322 yr Miami Beach made the $50 million commitment, now Dermer wants to go back on it. Sorry David, but no can do. Total $325 million _________________ Marlins $100 million Miami Beach $50 million 25 Year Naming Rights $50 million ___________________________ $325 million - $200 million = $125 million $125 million between skybox leases, Dade County, and City of Miami
July 11, 200322 yr Miami Beach OKs tax dollars Dermer was part of the commission, even though he took no positon on it, the city passed it and they can't go back on their word. Legally binding contract says so, we need the park to be a done deal by December. The money is part of a package for the ballpark and new performing arts center. Ballpark must be a done deal by 11:59 PM Nov. 30 or $50 million will be gone to Miami Beach. The clock ticks.
July 11, 200322 yr I think there should be a statue of renteria getting the game winning hit in 1997 world series game 7 I like that idea... There would also be a ring of fame like at Pro Player for the Dolphins...(not many players would be in it, though). I don't like the galleon, but I like the beach. Dermer was part of the commission, even though he vetoed it, the city passed it and they can't go back on their word. Legally binding contract says so, we need the park to be a done deal by December. Good, good news. It seems like Loria and Samson have something up their sleeves.
July 11, 200322 yr Billy Beach, coming to Centerfield at the new Marlins Ballpark in 2006! If you can find a picture of the Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando's pool, that's what I'm pictuing basing "Billy's Beach" after...
July 11, 200322 yr The galleon is a good idea, I just don't think it fits with the Marlins image. How about Marlins farting or something. It would be funny and the explosions would be coming from the appropriate end.
