January 26, 200521 yr But I guess you could also say that Barry Bonds is WAY past his prime as well....? :whistle 668464 Bonds had his best year in 2004. Delgado had his best year in 2000. Don't get me wrong, this is a good pickup, but you guys are acting like you signed Lou Gehrig to play first. 668498 I'd still take Delgado over the guys you mention. Seriously, I would. Yes Delgado is 32 years old, but he provides the impact that this team was missing. You'll never see another Lou Gehrig again, but you can't deny that Delgado is one of the best that was out there. 668514 Delgado is still a really good hitter, but he is declining. Last year was his weakest year since 97. A really good year, but not A level. As for the guys i mentioned, the last three are debatable, but you can't honestly say you'd rather have Delgado than Helton or Edmonds. In 03 he was the best player in AL offensively. But his dropoff in performance is the result of a leg injury that doesn't go away. He'll still be productive, but he's not a savior.

Delgado had a monster season in 03 (and was a legit MVP that year). You make it sound like Delgado has been a POS since 2000
January 26, 200521 yr Author I'm not even gonna think about Vlad, I think we got a great guy in Delgado and i'm happy. I would have loved to have Vlad but right now i'm just as happy with Delgado 668208 What good did he do in Anaheim? Er LA...Er Anaheim of LA. I'm happy with Carlos. No ifs ands or buts. 668213 He led them to the playoffs, what good has Carlos Delgado done for any of his Blue Jay teams. Vlad is a much better player no doubt about it, but i'm not gonna be depressed that we Delgado because he brings more balance to this lineup. 668527 But its not like the Angels were a subpar team without Vlad, I mean they did win the 2002 World Series and still pretty much have that same team still there. Vlad was a compliment player to what they already have (and if they didn't have the injuries in '03, they could have been back in the playoffs). So its not like Vlad took an average team and made them great or anything. He didn't have the impact on that team like Pudge did for the Marlins in '03. I just think that Delgado is just like Vlad to the Angels: A compliment to what they already have.

All I said was the year he peaked was 2000. You can still be a really good player for years after you peak. Read my post above, I said he was the best AL player offensively in 03. I do think he is on the decline, last year was his first year since 97 that he wasn't an "A" level player EDIT: Meant to say "best AL player offensively", not "best player offensively"

Helton and Edmonds are great players, don't get me wrong. But I've also seen Pudge come here after having an average 2002 season and coming here and performing really well. We'll just have to wait and see.
January 26, 200521 yr Who's this Vlad person you keep talking about? (only kidding) Having just watched what real negotiations look like it should be obvious to everyone that the Marlins were not ever really in the mix for VG. The fact is there was a reason we weren't. It was money, and when you look at how Delgado's contract is structured it has to be obvious to even the most casual observer that last year's financial decisions were shaped by the payments to Hampton and Pudge.
January 26, 200521 yr Delgado is still a really good hitter, but he is declining.? Last year was his weakest year since 97.?? A really good year, but not A level. January 26, 200521 yr Author Its also proven that some players have a drop off when switching leagues
January 26, 200521 yr Delgado is a nice consolation price 668467 He isnt a consolation price. Aside from bonds or jim thome, hes the best hitter we couldve signed. We needed a lefty 668468 Helton? Edmonds? Abreu? Ortiz? Dunn? 668497 I rather have delgado than edmonds who is older, or dunn the strike out machine, or abreu who isnt the presence in the lienup that delgado is. Ill agree with you on helton
January 26, 200521 yr I expect Delgado to be OK during his 05 first half and provide a huge boost during the 2nd half

And how the hell would you know that delgados best year will be 2000, if you havent seen how he will do this year or next? His best year to date was arguable 2000, but i think delgado had a stellar 2003. You're just pisted that the giants even with Bonds cant win the big one.

I wonder how Bonds would do without the cream :whistle
January 26, 200521 yr I would love to have Vlad, but it wasn't realistic last year. Vlad wouldn't take 5 million in his first two years of his contract which he would have had to do. I'm not disappointed at all we have Delgado. A b ig bat that will produce 30-110.
January 26, 200521 yr I don't think this is a fair question because the situations are different. Vlad would have been for one year, and we would not have been able to resign him. Delgado, at least as far as the contract goes, is for 4 years. Considering that Delgado is here for the long run whereas Vlad was for the short run, I think think Delgado does make up for it.
