February 5, 200521 yr I wonder if the players like Miami Marlins or Florida Marlins better :headscratch
February 5, 200521 yr State law in Florida would make it almost impossible to do what Colorado did. Colorado did it because Denver is the state capital and the legislators made an amendment to the tax laws to get it done. Palm Beach and Broward wouldn't be able to get a sales tax passed by their voters and then get state laws changed in time to chip in. 677761 That's not true. There is precedent in Florida for the creation of regional taxation authorities (SFRTA). While it would not necessarily be funding by state sales taxes, regional taxation authorities do have the power to levy ad valorem taxes on property within their jurisdiction. Not to mention the fact that Florida statutes already allow for interlocal agreements between governmental entities for any construction projects (I know, I've drafted several interlocal agreements and tri-party agreements both when I worked in local government as an assistant county attorney, as well as in my current practice where I've tried to get community improvement districts created in order to get large scale intermodal construction projects done! Petty regional rivalries, not Florida law, have prevented a regional solution to this problem. 677875 Property taxes would never go, however CDT and sales tax might. An interlocal agreement would never be reached anyways because CDT money is used by these 3 rival counties to compete against each other for tourists. Why would Ford and Chrysler pay into a pot with GM to help build a new factory that GM would operate and profit from?

February 5, 200521 yr Just to give my two cents: Before I ever knew that the Florida Marlins existed, I played a baseball game on GameGear, and they were called "Miami." So I was already used to the name before I knew that it wasn't real.

February 5, 200521 yr Miami pays - Miami gets the name. As of marketing, the M on the hat can stand for Marlins, if you want it to.
February 5, 200521 yr IF its not broke why fix it ? :compsmash 677828 You're right it isn't broke yet, but it will break in 2010 if the team doesn't have a stadium deal. Broward, Palm Beach or the state didn't step up -- Miami did. :coo As far as national marketing goes, Miami on a jersey looks much cooler than Florida.l
February 5, 200521 yr anyone have a picture of this spring training hat you're talking about with the M? 677543 677657 pretty hat. :thumbup 677673 Last I checked Miami was still in FL, so why not keep the name. I would like to see these old batting practice/spring training hats used either as the home hat or as an alternative hat. 677928 It's very simple to explain. Miami gave $138 million. The State of Florida is giving $60 million over 30 years. $138 million > $60 million Thus, Miami chooses the name. Would you have preferred some bastardized Florida Marlins of Miami sort of name? 677938 Well the Marlins are putting up $192 million so lets keep the FL in the name. 677940 You just contradicted yourself. The Marlins, not Florida, put up $192 million. Thus, they keep the Marlins part of the name. Not a very difficult proposition to grasp. Just like naming rights for a stadium.
February 5, 200521 yr There should be no issue now that territorial guarantees have been made by MLB to the Marlins. The name change will go forward and will happen. We call them the Marlins anyways....does it matter if they are in Miami?
February 5, 200521 yr The point is the Marlins will still be named Marlins ,Florida will be better but Maimi int that bad as long ass it isnt called Maimi Catfish or any thing like that Maimi catfish= :tv_horror Maimi marlins= :tv_happy :marlins

February 5, 200521 yr I personally like Florida for the interim, but ultimately the Miami Marlins just is much better and I love it. The team was named the Marlins to be compared to the Miami Dolphins (at least thats what Uncle Johns Bathroom Reader says), so the Miami part would make more sense. Its like the Nets being named the way they were becuase they wanted to be associated with the Jets and Mets...it didn't really make sense ultimately because the team was in Jersey, but will now that they are off to Brooklyn. Plus, the sad fact is that there is technically another Florida team in the Devil Rays. The Florida thing makes as much sense as a team being named the Golden State warriors while there are about 3 other california teams. I say just call them America's team and be done with it. If that doesnt work, go with Miami. Either way they will be the best team in baseball this year :cheers
February 5, 200521 yr Miami Marlins sounds good to me - because the Marlins would be staying put. I dont care what they are called, as long as they are in S Fl.

February 5, 200521 yr I think most fans outside of Miami will support the team and still be fans, despite the name change. The real issue I see is merchandising. How do you make a Palm Beacher buy something that says MIAMI on it? (Without going into details, I think all of us down in So. Fla. are aware of the air of competition between the 3 counties) My idea for a compromise is this: Have a team hat with just the image of a Marlin on it, and NO LETTERS. (Think Orioles, Astros, Indians) You can either just have that one cap, or have an alternate with the "M". That way, you give fans buying your merchandise their choice. My feeling is Broward and Palm Beach fans will go for the Fish hat, while Dade fans will get the M hat. And everyone will be happy. What do y'all think? 677743 Last time I checked those Palm beachers are buying dolphin and heat stuff. So why should it matter?

Likewise, most Heat jerseys only say HEAT. I'm sure a lot of fans don't care either way, but, believe me, many do. And, if Marlins management is smart, they'll address the issue so that there's no loss in revenue whatsover.

February 6, 200521 yr 80% of marlins fans come from broward and palm beach countys. it wold be so stpid to just rename the team the miami marlins. the new stadium so be built on the water in ft. lauderddale by the airport or port everglades.
February 6, 200521 yr The real issue I see is merchandising. How do you make a Palm Beacher buy something that says MIAMI on it? 677743 The same way they buy a hat that says Miami Dolphins or Miami Heat, it doesn't matter...

If a team was to be named according to where most of its fans lived, how will we call the NY Yankees? There are as many fans in Miami as in NY, should we call them the Miami Yankees then? This discussion is pointless. The will be renamed the Miami Marlins and that's it. It's out of your hands, so deal with it. gee... :banghead
February 6, 200521 yr if it means we get a stadium then so be it, I live in Miami and I'd rather keep it Florida, but whatever I also live less than 5 minutes away from the OB site. i cant wait till im sitting in a new ballpark close to my house
