Miami Marlins?

Featured Replies

If the change is required with the completion of a stadium deal, I couldn't be happier to change the name.

Changing the team name is a big deal for me, and it has nothing to do with the actual geography of Florida and which regions would be represented.

My main problem is that on most occasions when a franchise changes its name, the team's statistics are often represented as starting over and can become confusing. Essentially this means that Marlins history could restart.

If the name were changed to Miami, looking back at footage from over the last decade would feel awkward (including the two world series championships which were won with the title Florida).

Marlins history has been a fascinating one. Defintely more so than some of the other expansion teams which seem to remain the same year after year with absolutely no excitement (Tampa Bay, Colorado, etc.).

I doubt they are changing any history. The angles still have all their history dispite having 3 names. The Cardinals went from Phoenix to Arizona and nothing changed. All they would be doing would be to move 14 miles south in the county they are already in and change the first part of their name. If they were going to become Miami something or other then maybe you could say that.

Lets not forget that when MLB chose the cities for the new franchises, they chose Miami and Denver, not Colorado and Florida. The Rockies kept the Colorado in their names because it represents a huge region in the Mountains that doesn't have baseball. I believe Florida came about after the deal to bring the Giants to Tampa Bay fell through and they wanted something to represent the entire state.

But that was over 10 years ago and since then, Tampa has their own team and the fact remains that Miami was awarded this franchise to begin with. Besides, what does it matter if they have to change their name? Isn't it a small sacrifice to make just to have this team play here forever? :mischief2

Besides, let us not forget that Broward and Palm Beach were willing to do nothing to help this team out with a new stadium and it was the city of Miami and Miami-Dade county that stepped up. I think they deserve it..

Yes, please. Let's forget the regionalism for a second here and think about where you allegiance lies with. Either you are a fan of the team itself, or you are one of those who don't feel represented because their team's name doesn't contain the "county" where he/she leaves... Give it a break already!!! There was a Miami Marlins during the 50's-60's in this town and I don't think anybody complained that it wasn't named the Fort Lauderdale Marlins... Besides, if you are going to stop being a fan of the team because you live in Boca Raton, or Broward, or freaking Leesburg for that matter, and the team's name is not going to have the city where you leave... don't you think that's a very selfish position from your side? Don't you go to see the Miami Dolphins or the Miami Heat? And do you feel less represented because they are not called the Broward Dolphins, or the Ocala Heat? PLEASE !!! :banghead :banghead :banghead

I still wish the Angels were the California Angels.

I really would hate to see that become a new 'trend'. The Texas Rangers of Arlington. Colorado Rockies of Denver.

i couldnt agree more. Right on. It doesnt matter about the name. the team is the same team. nothings going to change but a simple name. miggy isnt going to stop hitting homer and jp isnt going to stop stealing bases. people are making a big deal out of nothing. i agree, Miami deserves it to have the team named after it. Besides, the majority of the fans lie in Miami. True, some dont, but only a small percent. if you are going to feel betrayed or sulk because the team isnt named after your city, then the Marlins dont need you as fans.

I think most fans outside of Miami will support the team and still be fans, despite the name change.

The real issue I see is merchandising. How do you make a Palm Beacher buy something that says MIAMI on it? (Without going into details, I think all of us down in So. Fla. are aware of the air of competition between the 3 counties)

My idea for a compromise is this:

Have a team hat with just the image of a Marlin on it, and NO LETTERS. (Think Orioles, Astros, Indians)

You can either just have that one cap, or have an alternate with the "M".

That way, you give fans buying your merchandise their choice. My feeling is Broward and Palm Beach fans will go for the Fish hat, while Dade fans will get the M hat.

And everyone will be happy. What do y'all think?

This is the type of thing I don't like to see:

No continuity erodes the identity of the franchise.

They are still the Angels. That hasn't changed. Now if you do what the Washington Wizards did a few years ago and completely change their name (from Bullets to Wizards), then I can understand your argument.

They will still be known as the Marlins and still have entered the league during the '93 season and still won two world championships in '97 and '03. :mischief

I agree with you. I would rather have the Miami Marlins instead of not having a team at all. :thumbup

i like the m with the marlins over it. its pretty. about the merchadising issue, the m doesnt necessarily mean Miami, it can be Marlins. Long shot, i know, but it doesnt spell out Miami. How do fans of the darn Yankees wear jerseys that say new york? theres fans of the yanks everywhere, and they buy their hats and jerseys.if youre a fan of the fish now, it makes no sense to stop being one just because of a name.

Rockies kept Colorado because 5 counties in Colorado enacted a new sales tax and created a stadium tax district to get Coors built and paid for.

677586

Then why doesnt Broward and Palm Beach each throw in 30 million each so we can get our stadium?

677590

State law in Florida would make it almost impossible to do what Colorado did. Colorado did it because Denver is the state capital and the legislators made an amendment to the tax laws to get it done. Palm Beach and Broward wouldn't be able to get a sales tax passed by their voters and then get state laws changed in time to chip in.

One correction, my memory lapsed and I posted 5 counties, it was a 6 county region.

If I recall correctly it also helped pay for Invesco Field at Mile High.

I personally like the idea of just the marlin on the cap with no letter. I guess I just think the F is more elegant than the M. Especially because the marlin really takes the form of the F.

IF its not broke why fix it ? :compsmash

The Beatles would say....LET IT BE, LET IT BE, LET IT BE, LET IT BE :D

Florida Marlins Forever.........However Stadium deal is sweet, so if the price is just to change the name to Maimi Marlins...then I'll bite.

Im not going to cry...sure beats the Miami Expos

That's not true. There is precedent in Florida for the creation of regional taxation authorities (SFRTA). While it would not necessarily be funding by state sales taxes, regional taxation authorities do have the power to levy ad valorem taxes on property within their jurisdiction. Not to mention the fact that Florida statutes already allow for interlocal agreements between governmental entities for any construction projects (I know, I've drafted several interlocal agreements and tri-party agreements both when I worked in local government as an assistant county attorney, as well as in my current practice where I've tried to get community improvement districts created in order to get large scale intermodal construction projects done!

Petty regional rivalries, not Florida law, have prevented a regional solution to this problem.

anyone have a picture of this spring training hat you're talking about with the M?

Last I checked Miami was still in FL, so why not keep the name. I would like to see these old batting practice/spring training hats used either as the home hat or as an alternative hat.

It's very simple to explain.

Miami gave $138 million. The State of Florida is giving $60 million over 30 years.

$138 million > $60 million

Thus, Miami chooses the name. Would you have preferred some bastardized Florida Marlins of Miami sort of name?

Well the Marlins are putting up $192 million so lets keep the FL in the name.
