I doubt that we will lose many players this offseason that are "good." Castillo, Lee, Urbina, Pudge and maybe Burnett if his contract is not picked up.

I can't see some of the more established players signing long-term deals that are incentive-laden. If they were one year deals, or if the players were unproven then yeah, but why would an established player take a risk on incentives, especially when he can go somewhere else and get the number up front?

Why won't they go somewhere else? Because they CAN'T! They aren't FA's.

Lowell will get a lot of guarenteed money, and some but not a lot of incentives. A-Gon will not get much guarenteed money AT ALL, considering he is a risk due to career numbers, ect. but will have a large incentives package. Willis will not at all get much guarenteed money because he has only played one season. Redman will get a solid base salary, with a good amount of incentives that will be hard to accomplish. Penny is unproven, and will get a low base salary with impossible to reach incentives (unless he actually reaches his potential). Burnett only has one good/great season under his belt, and is coming off major surgery. He will get a very low base salary next year and relitively low the next, but it will grow larger, and will also have a big yet hard to reach incentive package. If Looper keeps this up, he might end up with a deal for a good base salary with a good incentive package, in which he would have to be Billy Wagner to accomplish. Pavano can be signed cheaply long-term, and won't get a bi incentive deal either, being a seal. Encarnacion would be the same. Maybe an average of $3.5-4.5 Mill a year with a small incentive deal. Spooney could also be signed with a small base salary, but with a big incentives package.

All in all, it might sound expensive but in reality, there wouldn't be much guarenteed money handed out. And for a lot of those players to get that incentive money, they would have to perform to FULL potential. If they did, we would be winning. If we are winning, we can pay for it.

Can someone get me this Mofo's e-mail, so i can write to him and tell him to get whats left of his head out of his A** :angry

Wild Card already e-mailed him, but if you'd like to as well, the e-mail is at the bottom of the article.

these players dont have to sign these deals wc.... they can wiat till they are FA and leave....

none of these players would be happy with what you just wrote above

Its the fact that the Cubs play in a pathetically weak division, they have a very good shot at making the playoffs and making a trade makes sense, plus they got cash to pay...they have lost for 8000 years and they still sell out.

The Marlins do seem to have made an odd transaction in my opinion. I dont really see Urbina helping the Marlins so much that they could justify the pawning of their future.

Cubs havent won in a long time and a few transactions could put them over the top in terms of their respective division, which is the goal. A risk they could and should take. The Marlins don't have the luxury of being in a crapphole division.

point taken Smith. I don't have a problem with the deal personally because I think the bullpen needed this kind of player bad. And because I think our farm system is pretty deep, and also because I enjoy the simple fact of the front office going out and getting help instead of dismantling around this time of year... I just don't think this team has the luxury of looking 3, 4 years into the future. Time is of the essence down here and this team needs all the local support it can get. They're trying to get a stadium deal done. Rightly so, they're capitalizing on all the hype they can possibly get. A year ago the league was talking contraction for christ sakes....

As for how much of an impact Urbina will make, we'll have to wait and see...but I forsee them throwing him out there at every opportunity.

sorry wc but you are an idiot

if steve trachsel and rey sanchez can get guaranteed money, so can any of these players

that's not "many" to you??

an all-star 2B, a hall of fame catcher, a gold glove level 1B who can hit for power, and an ace pitcher?

sorry wc but you are an idiot

They are veterans that have proved what they are and aren't capable of. Most of these guys aren't proven. They are still potential. SO they will get the guarenteed money that they are worth now, and if they perform to what everyone thinks they can, they will get what they are worth anyway. Either way they get what they deserve.

Like they can get more guarenteed money else where? All but Lowell, Loop, and Encarnacion are proven. The others wouldn't fetch much on the FA market (not icluding Willis) so they would sign, seeing that if they believe the can do great thigns, they feel they can earn that incentives package.

rethink this post for a while WC. I know you're young but you can't be this naive. Tell me which players you're talking about.

That's worse case scenario.

Castillo has not been as productive this season as in seasons past.

Pudge was here for one year anyway.

DLee is on the trading block and the minor leaguers were supposed to be doing well and be ready to come up.

Burnett has not helped us win this year at all, he has had an injury.

I've been rambling all day...

I'm going to delete that post. I didn't even read what I wrote and it does sound pretty ignorant...

Second that opinion Ramp.

Hollandsworth got a deal, no reason to think ANY team out there wouldn't take a chance on a young player with the Marlins who has shown potential throughout his whole career.

wtf is going on fish?

why are we agreeing all of the sudden :lol

Cause someone has lost his marbles. :whistle

Fish, TH only got $1.5 Million.

Exactly. If an ageing player with a bad rap for injuries that has underperformed the last couple of years ca land a deal for 1.5 mil, what makes anyone think that a young Marlin can't find a team out there to take them?

That's because you aren't really Ramp. Your account has been taken over by the evil minions of Satan to further promote negativity!

Oh, and by the way, did I mention we need to trade D. Lee, like yesterday?

nah, i dont want to break this team up right now....(meaning trade dlee)

thats where i disagree with you FF

Most of the players on the team would ge just as much or more than $1.5 Mill per guarenteed in a contract, with the incentive package.

Well Smith, our bullpen is our biggest weakness. We have had a very good rotation all season, and a pretty good line-up, but the bullpen has been shaky. Now we added one of the best closers in the game to the pen, plus we'll get Spooneybarger back. Any pitcher in our rotation can go six to 7 innings (if not more) per game. We might end up going from a bad bullpen to one of the best in the NL. There isn't a team in the NL but the Astros who can match our pen fron the seventh inning on (Spooneybarger, Urbina, Looper) and that's the Astros. Basically, we traded for Urbina to replace Spooney, and when we get Spooney back it will be like we just traded for a top level reliever, solidifying our teams only real weakness.

I understand how good Urbina is...but for what? You may make the wildcard with him (ill be conservative and say you wouldnt make the WS, sorry) and good for you guys but is it worth the next 5-10 yrs that you could have with Adrian Gonzalez, #1 pick? I just dont see why a team would do that when there is plenty of relievers out there teams are willing to give up.

Im not dissing Urbina, great player....I just see it as painfully shortsighted.
