Posted July 17, 200321 yr TRADE NOTES Marlins-Rangers The Rangers sent Ugueth Urbina to the Marlins for three Class AA players -- first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, outfielder Will Smith and lefthanded pitcher Ryan Snare. Pretty much everyone in baseball has ripped the Marlins for this deal, but I don't think it's all that bad. Gonzalez was a luxury in Florida because they also have Jason Stokes (the 2002 Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year) on the way, a much better power hitter than Gonzalez. The Marlins probably won't need a first baseman until 2005 and by then Stokes should be good to go. Gonzalez strikes me as a Sean Casey/John Olerud type hitter. Smith also is a good hitter, but again the Marlins have plenty of organizational depth in the outfield. With Chip Ambres showing improved discipline at the plate at Class AA, Jeremy Hermida hitting very well at low Class A and with Miguel Cabrera, Juan Pierre and Juan Encarnacion already in the majors, the Marlins are okay. Snare is a decent pitcher, but he's 24 and still at Class AA. That's not necessarily a knock, but it is a sign that he's not star material. Some think he's destined to be a lefthanded reliever. Keep in mind that the Marlins are trying to win a public relations battle in South Florida. A move like this will generate enthusiasm, and they need fan support a heck of a lot more than they need the players they sent to the Rangers in this deal, no matter how this whole thing turns out. Besides, if they fall too far out of the race over the next two weeks, they always can trade Urbina to someone else. *sound like I've heard and read this thoughts before... :lol http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=mino...v=tsn&type=lgns **side notes: I couldn't get a firm Yes or No on the rumored Twins offer. Also the Padres and Marlins trade talks are heating up again. :whistle Also I was talkin to someone today, that told it would be nice to see a former Marlin return to the club for this run. I thought he was talkin about Conine but he was talkin about Al Leiter. Which got me thinking would the Marlins bring in another vet for the rotation? whould you like a Weathers/Leiter deal?
July 17, 200321 yr Al Leiter would be cool. I'm not sure of his numbers this year (I don't think they are good) but I think he still has it in him and three lefties in the rotation would be interesting. This would also move Pavano to the pen and give us a pretty freaking awesome total pitching staff. Think of it this way (this is the way I would break it up): Willis-Beckett-Redman-Penny-Leiter L-R-L-R-L Is a nice breakup, keeps teams staggering their lineups against us and won't let them become consistent with one lineup. I like the idea.
July 17, 200321 yr Leiters a big game pitcher and I would love to have him, but don't you think we'll have to give up a lot to get both of them. You think we could throw Pavano in a deal with the mets?

July 17, 200321 yr I dont thinks so the mets are in a fire sale so it would take some propects. I think they would take Pavano and one or two avg. prospects. They also would give some cash.
July 17, 200321 yr Personally, I'd rather throw in Penny. But I don't think either will go. Al Leiter? Hmmm... I have to say it's an interesting idea. He lives here, he loves PPS (except when Juan Pierre bunts, steals second and then taunts him as he goes for third) BUT, and its a big BUT, he isn't the pitcher he was a couple of years ago. He's no longer dominating as his stats will show. He'd be a decent addition, no doubt. Weathers I can take or leave. There's something that strikes me odd about doing business with the Mets, or any other team in our division. The Mets desperately need to unload salary to GET BETTER. Why would we help them out of their mess? The more high salary players they unload the quicker they can be competitive again. I say let them drown in their excrement. There has to be someone else we can trade with that won't impact us down the road. But if a deal like this does happen and Leiter is in the rotation, that means either Penny or Pavano goes to the pen. That means we're strengthening our bullpen. Having a corp of relievers - Pavano (or Penny or even Beckett), Phelps, maybe Spooney, Uggie and Looper is a d*mn fine (for the Marlins) bullpen. There's no Smoltz or Gagne (I know, I know, I watched the AS game) but all in all it would be a big improvment from what we've had so far this season. It would probably be the best since '97. So I'm conflicted. On one hand, he'd be a welcome addition, on the other I'm not of a mind to help the Mets get out from underneath their problems. But as usual Ed has brought something interesting to discuss to the board.
July 17, 200321 yr Do you think the Mets would take this deal? Marlins get: Leiter, Weathers Mets get: Pavano, and Wayne, and maybe another prospect if they pay part of Leiter and Weathers salaries.

July 18, 200321 yr Author I believe Leiter is off the DL as of today. He went on the 15-day on June 30th.
July 18, 200321 yr we gave up 3 very good Minor Leagers but we needed to with our Crappy bullpen! It was a good deal, Urbina is a real good pitcher and was leading in Saves in the AL. Now he can help Looper close out some games and our bullpen got stronger now. In my opinion it was a good and even Trade....
