February 27, 200521 yr Marlins announcer Van Horne returns after cancer treatment BY KEVIN BAXTER, Miami Herald Dave Van Horne, the Marlins' radio voice since 2002, returned to spring training Saturday after the last of four surgical procedures he has undergone since January to treat skin cancer. Van Horne, a veteran of 33 big-league seasons in the radio booth, was diagnosed with basal skin carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer and one that affected about 800,000 people in the United States last year. Van Horne, who was wearing a bandage on his face Saturday, had three spots treated on the right side of his face and one on his left forearm. ''It's something thousands of people face,'' Van Horne said in downplaying the surgeries. The cancer won't keep him from working the Marlins' first scheduled spring training broadcast Thursday afternoon when the Marlins play the Baltimore Orioles in Jupiter. That game, which can be heard on WQAM-AM (560), will also mark the debut of Van Horne's new partner, University of California basketball announcer Roxy Bernstein. The Marlins are expected to announce Bernstein's signing early this week. Bernstein, who will replace Jon ''Boog'' Sciambi as the Marlins' No. 2 radio announcer, has called minor-league baseball on radio for four years and has filled in for Jon Miller on occasion on San Francisco Giants broadcasts. ''I've done that before,'' Van Horne said of breaking in a new partner. ``It's not anything new.'' http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/11004023.htm
