Possible Replacements For Burnett

Featured Replies

Tim Hudson signing a 4 year, $47 million deal with the Braves will heavily affect the Marlins resigning A.J. Burnett. Now, likely Burnett will command more than $10 million a season in his new contract. In my opinion, we are going to lose him to free agency. Now, it is time to look for replacements. I was looking to the upcoming free agents and here are my top 5 replacements.

1. Brad Penny- He is young and dependable. Can produce a 200 K+ season while getting 15+ wins. He would be the best replacement of A.J. Burnett. Would command a 4 year deal worth in the neighborhood of $38 to 44 million.

2. Chris Carpenter- He has excellent command of the strikezone and has the capability to throw 95 mph fastballs. Does not have the decieving curveball that Burnett possesses but makes the most of his basic arsenal. Would command a 3 year deal worth in the neighborhood of $20 to 28 million.

3. Kevin Millwood- Proven veteran with a good arsenal of pitches. Can lead a team when he is on the top of his game. Does contain himself well when under pressure. Good overall pitcher with good bunting capability. Would command a 3 year deal worth in the neighborhood of $19 to 26 million.

4. Jeff Weaver- Has had as many quality starts as Randy Johnson. He will be the ace of the Dodger staff. Contains an excellent knowledge of the strike zone and can command the strike zone with precision. Would command a 4 year deal worth in the neighborhood of $30 to 44 million.

5. Jarrod Washburn- Has lead the Angle staff for the past four seasons and lead the Angels to the World Series Champions in 2002. Could provide the Marlins with a dominant lefty starter that has Leiter like qualities at a much younger age. Would command a 4 year deal worth in the neighborhood of $28 to $42 million. I would like to see him on the Marlins staff for four years or more.

Other Possible Replacements: Tom Glavine, Matt Morris, Esteban Loaiza, Paul Byrd and Jason Schmidt (if options is not activated.)

Be awesome if Penny were to come backbut I don't think we can afford him.

Millwood hell no

Washburn is interesting candidate that I wouldn't mind seeing

Weaver at that price, I'd have to say no. if we are going to spend that much just re-sign AJ

I'd love to see Penny back in a Marlin Uniform. He's my favorite player and he made one my favorite baseball memories come true last year and seeing him traded last year was really tough.

Umm.. I still think Burnett will come back... Call me crazy, but I think they'll re-sign him.

if he has a solid season there not going to let him get away...

but if he still has arm problems or doesnt have a good year they'll let him go...

I have a feeling that burnett is going to be here next year but if he goes id like to see the fish replace him with either penny or washburn.

If burnett is worth 10 million per year then beckett should be worth 20 million(sarcasm),Burnett hasn't proved nothing to anybody..all he has under his belt is a no-hitter in which he had 9 walks in,so unless he has a good season i dont see him making 10 million a season.

:notworthy SAME HERE

I think Burnett will be back, and with a spot open in the rotation, if one of our prospects dosent shine this season in the minors, I can see us TRYING to get Penny back as well
