The Real Magic Number

Hey everyone, I just found this board and can't believe I never knew about it before. Glad to join you, and go Fish!!! Anyways, here's a little something Ive got to say...

Over the past few seasons, we've always hovered somewhere around the .500 mark for the good part of the season. We've always been a .500 team, and nothing better or worse really. And I've noticed that in each of the past 3 seasons, the highest mark the team was ever at was 5 games over. Not once have we been able to get over that hump.

2000: 13-8

2001: 39-34

2002: 20-15

Now, once again we are creeping up on that mark. And I think once we eclipse it and get to six games over, I will really feel good about the chances of making the wild card. Anywhere below five games over just isn't enough breathing room imo. And I have a feeling that once we get over the hump, we'll take off!!

Can't wait to go to the game on Sunday, and hope I can go to tonight's game as well!

Good post D, I agree and welcome. It does seem that this team lacked the killer instinct necessary - in the past. But I think this year is different. And we are doing it without our best pitcher, and right now our most vital offensive player. This, in a strange way, could be a good thing though as it develops a team concept...we'll see.

nice to have you around DTrain. These next few series are gonne be H-U-G-E. It seems like everyone we play in the next few weeks all have playoff aspirations, though I know it's still early.

Cubs, Expos, Braves, Phils, DBacks, Cards, Dodgers, we play 'em all. Everybody's looking to make a move.

The nice thing is we'll face most of them at home. :thumbup

I think the worst is over. The stretch that determined our identity as either a pretender or a contender really helped us as we went 6-3. And although the worst part is over, it doesn't mean the rest is easy by any means. I honestly think tonight is going to be a hard win to pick up, but the sold out crowd might pump them and Brad Penny up. I know I'll be there (hopefully).

BTW: Welcome! lol

First time since 97 we're 6 over...
