Trade bait for what?

Featured Replies

We have a helluva lot of quality bench, bull-pen and minors prospects. Competition is stiff.

I don't want to lose any of them.

But, if we wanted to beef-up for the 2005 run, what (who) would we want that could be reasonably traded for from our "surplus" of talent?

I love Willingham, Dillon and others coming on strong like Mark Little, Jorg, etc.

Is there any reason to trade any of them... and for what???

Our farm system has been terribly depleted lately, going from one of the best to one of the worst in a matter of a few years. I hope we don't need to make major deals at the deadline this year where we give up top prospects.

The only bright side is that we have so many early picks in the draft this year...hopefully scouting has does a pretty good job and we are at least able to replenish the system somewhat.

Gross exaggeration...we do not have one of the worst minor league systems.

The loss of Alisson is obviously hurting us right now. Look for the upcoming draft, which includes some extra compensatory picks, to bolster the system. More quality picks like Tank & Vargas are sure to come.

Our minor league system is ranked in the low 20s by Sports Weekly. More quality picks may be sure to come but RIGHT NOW, our ranks are thin.

I'm hoping we'll be able to pick up a quality starter come trade deadline time. (Barry Zito)

The problem is a lot of our prospects are getting older and older and hence are less and less of prospects. Stokes, Willingham, Reed and Hutchinson arent getting any younger. If we can trade these guys for trade bait, it wouldnt be too big a deal. Hermida, Olsen, Bazardo, Tankersley and Vargas are the pieces teams are going to want.

Who can we get or who might we be looking at? A glance over at the free agents of next offseason thread reveals a lot of names. Injuries will clearly play a role.

If we cant get too much production from RF, there are a lot of players who could be midseason trades from teams who could struggle or be willing to make trade and probably wouldnt cost too much(as long as Beinfest isnt buying the way he did in 2003) I see Preston Wilson, J. Jones, Randy Winn, Jose Cruz etc.

If Valdez doesnt produce or Leiter has injury problems, a fifth starter might be had. Im looking over at Oakland where if the As struggle, do they trade Zito? That would take some pretty pennies though. Jamie Moyer and Millwood might be out there.

Those are the only two possible problem areas we might have if injuries dont strike(knock on wood).

LOL, one of the worst? You've got to be kidding me.

The Yankees have one of the worst, not us.

Most of our talent is in A-ball, and like someone else said, these guys aren't getting younger.

EDIT: My bad, ranked 15th by Sports Weekly. Guess it's not as bad as I thought.

Our minor league system is middle of the pack, it's not bad but not nearly as good as we need it to be. I think it was ranked 15th by Baseball America.

Our big impact players are in AA (Hermida, Olsen, Bazardo), and in our A league, we have two potential blue-chippers (Tankersly, Vargas) and in AAA we have two players with more value to other teams than us (Stokes, Willingham).

I wouldn't call that an awful farm system, or anything to be worried about.

Aside from Hermida, I can understand the mind-set behind trading any of our players in the system for help this year. Mind you, I'm not advocating a trade sending Olsen and Bazardo for a set-up man, but I'd see the logic in sending one of them (maybe even both if we know we can work out an extension) and Willingham for Zito or Sheets.

LOL, it'll take a lot more than Willingham to land Zito or Sheets.

He said Willingham, Bazardo and/or Olsen.

I dont think our farm system is one of the worst. We are #15, so we are neither good nor bad. In between, just mediocre. Basically, it is never a good thing to be mediocre, so I hope this improves.

shut the f*** up. honest mistake. how bout you get the f*** off my grill.

Yeah, so, anyway, I could see Josh Wilson nabbing a decent major leaguer. Maybe an adequate #5 like our own Ismael Valdez. Aside from that, nobody has much value.

its far from mediocre

Our farm system would be awesome if our drafts and 2001 and 2003 weren't complete wastes. From those two drafts combined there's only 1 player (at this point) that looks to have any kind of potential and that's Logan Kensing. Hopefully last year's draft was an indication of things to come.
