fauowls44
FAU hires Matt Doherty to coach basketball By Marcus Nelson Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Saturday, April 16, 2005 BOCA RATON ? Florida Atlantic has hired Former North Carolina coach Matt Doherty to be its next basketball coach, sources familiar with the coaching search said. Some members of the basketball coaching staff were told Doherty has been hired and there would be a staff meeting on Monday and possibly a meeting with members of the team later in the afternoon. An official announcement on Doherty's hiring could also come Monday. Doherty was on campus Wednesday interviewing for the position that has been vacant since Sidney Green was fired last month. Repeated phone calls to Athletic Director Craig Angelos were left unreturned. After interviewing 25 candidates, FAU was down to three finalists at the end - Doherty, former BYU coach Roger Reid and Norfolk State coach Dwight Freeman. Dick Vitale is reporting this on ESPN also. What an upgrade from Sidney Green! This program has been in a death spiral since they reached the NCAA's in 2002, this should be a much needed shot in the arm. Guest Fritz
The national championship team of UNC was his doing. I wonder what he could do with FAU. I bet he could make them into a respectable 90s Gonzaga type squad.

nc marlin
I'm pulling for him. They're my new second favorite team. And for the record I was always a huge Doherty supporter and was saddened when he was fired.

Mark
FAU had some quality talent when they came to Gainesville this year...I could see them contending in their conference or whatever (I don't know much about them), but I couldn't see them gaining any kind of national exposure like Gonzaga. Passion
Doherty will probably be there 2 years, get them to the tourney or NIT, then get a better job somewhere. This is just the stepping stone he needed.

SHUfishfan
I think he'll make them better, I have a friend on the team so I saw them a couple of times. They look like they have a decent team and Doherty will add some talent because of his name and his ability as a coach but I don't see them being anywhere near the Gonzaga team of the 90s, he'll use this as a stepping stone to get back to the big time. He is appearently bringing in former Heat guard and current Valpo assistant Rex Walters in with him, so he very well could be ready to take over if Doherty eventually moves on.
