Shamrock
In trying to steer us away from the many retarded threads on this board I'd like to know what anyone thinks about the possible US/China showdown over Taiwan. The NYT had an article detailing the Chinese buildup in amphibious troop transport capability and other military advances. Does anyone think a war between these 2 giant countries is a possiblity in our lifetimes?
Flying_Mollusk
Here is a Washington Post article on China's improving military capabilities: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/artic...-2005Apr11.html Personally Id like to think both sides would realize that an all out conflict would be terrible to their own interests. More so than ever, we live in an era of the global economy and because of this, China may have better interest in dealing with Taiwan as an economic partner rather than an underling. Be that as it may, Taiwan will be a large factor in the future. More bad news is that some of the nitwits in this country will start protesting Chinese food and Chinese people. We will probably see something stupid like changing General Tso's chicken to General Bushs' chicken.
Flying_Mollusk
Read this article also in the NYT(what a great paper, f*** those that bash it), on the the growing Chinese and Indian relations and their economies. 30 some off years ago, these two countries had a quasi border war. There are still border issues but there are definitley secondary to teh developing markets. Both countries envy each otehr in different ways. For 30 years India languished in cultural and religious conflicts but is now awakening into a huge economc age. I think this age will spell the end of any superfluous military conflicts. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/10/internat...ner=rssuserland
ToadLicker
Amphib transport isn't interesting unless you have other assets to protect it to the target.
CapeFish
I think the big issue would be a Japanese-Chinese struggle over Formosa (Taiwan). Japan feels threatened by China and that could draw the US into something.
Fish Tank Frenzy
I dont think a war between the US and China will ever happen. There is just tooo much at stake and not enough in the end. Now, if a war does go down, the draft would be instilled immediately. The US would have a large coaltion at its back aswell. If something does go down I cant see the US being the ones to instigate it. I would fear that nuclear weapons would be used. I also fear that Yao Ming would be deported back to China . mmmm General Bush Chicken mmmm
BullDurham
I also don't think a war with China will ever happen. Because if it should come close, all China has to do is say one word, "SELL!!"
FutureGM
I would also have to say that an actual war would happen between the two countries. Any military war would likely be with nuclear weapons, which is a no-win scenario for either side. Plus, we rely on each other for trade. I think the odds of another large world-war style conflict are very low now, due to the existence of a world economy.

Dodge
Before 9/11 (especially when we had a spy plane crew on Hainan), I would have sworn that we'd be at war with China by 2005.

That was about the last time that tensions between the U.S. and China were high.
CapeFish
I would be more worried about a quick government change in China than a war against them. The Chinese get along with the US more than Russia, Japan, most of Europe, and Canada. We were the only country to remain economically-friendly with them even though they were Communist. The US amb. to China at one time was the President's father and I don't expect issues between the US and China. I would be much more worried about an India-China or Japan-China conflict. That would tear the US-UK into neutrality.

You could say they have no choice but to keep buying our bonds, since we're essentially looking the other way as our trade deficit with them continues to balloon. But yeah, if push came to shove over Taiwan, I'm sure they'll use that as leverage.

Das Texan
North Korea is a bigger threat. China plays in their own little silly world, while trying more and more to enter the game of capitalism each day. China needs the United States economically just as much as we need them, regardless of what any figures might show. A war with the United States would seriously jeopardize that goal of the Chinese government.
ToadLicker
So, why wouldn't the PRC just crush the DPRK if they get "uppity" and pose a risk?
