Willis could start ASG

Featured Replies

From the Palm Beach Post:

Dontrelle Willis (10-2), who leads the majors in victories, should get at least four more starts before the All-Star Game. If he continues his roll, Willis could become the first Marlins pitcher start for the National League.

McKeon has looked at the schedule and believes Willis' final start of the first half will come either on the Friday or Saturday before the game, which is Tuesday, July 12, in Detroit.

"He could be fully rested," McKeon said. Willis was an All-Star in 2003 as a rookie.

Willis gets 6 more starts before the ASG. The way he has been pitching he could have another 3 or 4 wins by then.

It would be great to see him start the game, but its some stiff competition out there. Should be great either way :thumbup

I think he'll start the ASG. At this point, with already 10 wins, I think it's pretty clear that he'll atleast pitch in the ASG. The only question is if he'll start it or not.

Adam Eaton and Livan Hernandez are giving him a nice run.

Whether he starts or not, unless he has a compete meltdown we should see him in the game.

Even if he looses all of his 6 remaining games and heads into the break at 10-8, he still has a chance at pitching in the game. He doesn't need to win anymore games to go to the ASG, and he only needs to win 2 more or so if he wants to start.

I"m almost 85% certain La Russa will have him start.. I only say that because Morris is 7-0 with a 3.27 ERA and he should have about 3-4 more starts.. He could be 11-0, 10-1 or something like that.. Dontrelle as of now should be starting.

It will be him or Pedro...

i dont think willis has locked up the starting roll in the asg as many of you think he has. You cant just start off hot (when 10 of 12) then fall off the map (lose last 4) and expect to start the ASG. He has definitely locked up being on the roster. If he goes into the ASG with 12 or 13 wins he will definitely start regardless of Morris (good point cards fan). La Russa respects what Willis is doing and since the Cardinals will have 3rd base, SS (hopefully), first, center, and 2nd base (hopefully) in the ASG and basically own the NL roster (again) then he wont mind giving a Marlins pitcher the start.

theres nothing more that La Russa likes than a young talented pitcher who is humble and works hard at his craft like Willis does. So you better believe that if Willis wins at least 2 of his last 4 he will be starting.
