ANAHEIM, calif. ? Add Craig Hansen to the list of bullpen dalliances for the Marlins.

Having already made unsuccessful runs at Steve Karsay, Danny Graves and Ugueth Urbina this season, the Marlins reportedly made a last-ditch effort to sign the hulking St. John's right-hander.

According to Baseball America, the leading draft authority, the Marlins offered Hansen a pre-draft package of $2.8 million that included an immediate major league call-up. A major league source confirmed the scenario this weekend, saying Hansen likely would have been taken with the 22nd overall pick instead of Houston high school lefty Aaron Thompson.

One version making the rounds had Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria calling Hansen directly to make the offer to his fellow New Yorker on June 7. Hansen, whose advisor is Scott Boras, rejected the offer and went 26th overall to the Red Sox.

St. John's coach Ed Blankmeyer would neither confirm nor deny the offer, calling his discussions with Hansen "confidential." However, Blankmeyer did say the Marlins scouted Hansen heavily.

"Were the Marlins interested?" Blankmeyer said. "They absolutely were."

Hansen posted a 1.41 ERA this season with 14 saves and 77 strikeouts in 57 innings. He dominated the wood-bat Cape Cod League last summer and wowed scouts with a fastball that tops out at 97 mph.

The Diamondbacks considered taking him with the top overall pick. How close is Hansen to pitching in the majors?

"Very close, depending on the organization," Blankmeyer said. "His stuff is that good. Is he ready mentally? Only time will tell. But get him out there physically with what he has to offer, and I think he's good enough to play in the major leagues this summer."

I don't blame the Marlins they did everything they could from reading the article. I have a feeling though Boras had already told him the Red Sox were ready to take him at 26. The kid probable gave Boras a short list of teams he wanted to go to.Put yourself in the kid shoes being from the northeast, who would you wanted to pitched for? This kid was the Yankees or Red Sox before the draft started.

wow, $2.8 million. I'm glad we didn't sign him.

This kind of stuff just shows why the MLB draft needs some severe corrections.

It is absolutely ridiculous that an agent/player can basically choose where they want to sign and for how much.

Agreed...Scott Boras alone is keeping the small market teams from even drafting the players that they want.

immediate major league call up and 2.8 mil? Damn, that pitcher is a moron. I hope he has a terrible career.
