SP Barry Zito (92.2 IP, 3-8, 4.66 ERA, 69 K)

 

 

Zito will be the third Oakland "ace" dealt this season

 

Florida Marlins trade:

SP Scott Olsen (80.1 IP, 6-4, 3.92 ERA, 94 K at Double-A)

RP Guillermo Mota (20.0 IP, 0-1, 6.30 ERA, 2 saves, 14 K)

 

--Oakland GM Billy Beane has made some brilliant deals over the past few seasons and he?ll try to net yet another great pitching prospect, this time from the Marlins in Scott Olsen. Olsen, ranked 59th overall by On Deck and the Marlins #2 overall prospect, appears to have all the tools to become a successful starter at the major league level. An unhappy Mota will assume closer duties for A?s team that is hesitant to give Huston Street the job at such a young age.

I say go for it since Jason Vargas is developing so fast. As much as I like Olsen, I think that would be the perfect place for him to develop even further, and besides, he'll be out west instead of sitting around here.

I really don't think the A's would want Mota. I could be wrong though. As long as their way out of the playoff picture why wouldn't they want Street in the closer role? It gets him much needed experience.

The A's used to be good at finding good closers... but they're 0 for their last 2. Maybe they want to give it another try. Or maybe they just want a setup man for Street. I don't know though. I know we need a SP but I just don't like Zito. Maybe a move to the NL is what he needs.

I think that trade would work out for both parties involved....but the only catch is are the marlins basically renting Zito for the rest of the year or will there be intrested in Zito to be resigned at the end of the season????

I'd love if we could make that deal! I don't see Oakland doing it, though. Zito has pitched very well other than two bad starts. I think he'd be very successful with us. I just wonder how he'd feel leaving the West Coast.

He's not a FA next year. He has one more year on his deal after this year.

The As would be getting a great deal.

This is a good move for the Marlins this year and next year. If they make this move I would think it would be in part due to management not thinking Olsen will be ready to start next season because of the inconsistency and lack of maturity he's shown this year. As much as it leaves a huge hole in our bullpen, Mota isn't very good for chemistry right now, and I don't think there's anybody more in Jack's doghouse.

I think its a terrible plan. Zito will command oodles regardless of the perception that he is having an off year. We won't resign him, we'll lose a good prospect and a setup man that is in the process of remembering how great he used to be.

Like I said above, Zito is under contract for next year. He'd replace AJ once he leaves for NY or Boston.
