July 18, 200521 yr Better cancel Burnett's flight to O'Hare. The White Sox appeared to have the best match for Burnett until the Orioles made a furious charge over the weekend. And now, multiple sources said Monday morning, there is a possibility Burnett could be heading for Baltimore within 24 hours. One baseball man with knowledge of the discussions said, however, that while the teams are now "closer" than they've ever been to a deal, they're still "not in the final stages yet." The Marlins would get back reliever Jorge Julio, outfielder Admin Bigbie and Baltimore's most advanced pitching prospect, Hayden Penn. Baltimore would receive Burnett and agree to take Mike Lowell. The Orioles then would shift Melvin Mora back to the outfield to take Bigbie's place, so Lowell could play third. And Florida would move Miguel Cabrera back to third base, from whence he came, while platooning Bigbie with Jeff Conine in left. Because the Marlins wouldn't be getting a big-league-ready starting pitcher in the deal, they also could try to deal Penn to a third team for a more experienced arm. It's still unclear whether the Orioles would ask for a 48- or 72-hour window to attempt to sign Burnett to an extension. Burnett already has said publicly that he would be interested in signing with the Orioles because his wife is from Maryland, so the need for that window might be moot. The Red Sox (offering a package headed by Bronson Arroyo), Blue Jays (Gustavo Chacin and bullpen arms) and Yankees (Carl Pavano, Felix Rodriguez and prospects) also have stepped up in recent days. But if no one outbids Baltimore before the end of the day, it appears Burnett will be an Oriole.

July 18, 200521 yr As I said earlier in the season, in order to accomplish the Barry Zito trade, the Marlins are going to need to give up a very good pitching prospect, and a decent hitting prospect. Hermida would seal the deal, but that is not going to happen. Hayden and Dillon and/or Stokes will get Zito in teal.

It was their willingness to take on Lowell, a guy with a .227 batting average, just four home runs in 300 at-bats and nearly $21 million (and 2 ? years) left on his contract. The White Sox also have interest in Lowell, but clubs that have spoken with them say they're wrestling with whether to mess with the chemistry of the best team in baseball. And while the Twins also have kicked the tires on Lowell, they aren't involved in the Burnett bidding. The Orioles, on the other hand, have been told that if they'll take Lowell, Florida would drop its demand that starter Daniel Cabrera be part of any deal for Burnett. And when the Orioles indicated over the weekend that they would be open to that, the teams began closing in on a deal.

So even if they go on a seven-game losing clump starting today, why not just start raiding, say, the Florida Marlins? The Marlins are in the same spot as the Cubs, only without fans or revenue. They go on an instant run for the wild card, right? But if they don't make it after trading for Pierre, then what have they lost? A bunch of prospects? The last batch of surefire position-playing prospects for the Cubs was Hee Seop Choi, now a mediocre first baseman for the Dodgers; Corey Patterson, now in Des Moines; and Bobby Hill, now a utility player for the Pirates. July 18, 200521 yr Why is Mr. Rosenthal dumb? Well, Mike Lowell has fallen from graces here, that's no lie. However what better park to rejuvenate him in then Camden Yards? He has the strong possibility to put up monster numbers there, and unlike Sammy Mikey is still racking up doubles (though the line drive variety down the line instead of the gap variety that is the hint of an oncoming power surge). He can still be a good player, maybe not 8 mil worth, but serviceable. Penn is the Orioles' best pitching prospect, but what the hell does that mean to us? Olsen is better. Vargas is better. Allison's arm is better. Johnson is almost as good. And at least one of the three we drafted this year in the first round, if not two or all three, will be better. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this is a key example of this. To the Orioles they might be giving up a big wad of gold, but we'd only be getting a sliver of bronze. Miguel is more comfortable at third, no argument there as I've been saying it forever. But why would Bigbie do well here? JRS is not a LH hitter's paradise - on the contrary, it's where lefties not named Delgado come to die - and we already have a left handed hitting outfielder named Jeremy Hermida that would get the chance should Lowell be moved and Cabs be set into place at third. If we're saving all the oodles of money anyways, it's going to take maybe 1 mil more to resign Enc than it will to have Bigbie go through arbitration, and Enc is the better player and is infinitely more talented. The Marlins won't be trading for Barry Zito. Put that pipe dream away now. To acquire Zito in real life, not by the horrendous scenarios thrown out so far, it would require a top pitching prospect that is major league ready, a top tier hitting prospect who is close to major league ready preferably, and another prospect. At least. We don't have the kind of luxury to be selling of parts and then burning up our farm to pick up another one. If we're going to compete and charge hard, we keep AJ. If we aren't, we don't acquire Zito. Either way he ain't coming. And as an aside, nice call by my buddy Ken on Josh Johnson being the top Marlin pitching prospect. Olsen and Bazardo were both ahead of him at AA, and that's only in AA not accounting for our other pitchers like Vargas, and Johnson is magically our top guy? Way to spin it, homer. July 18, 200521 yr I know I said trade for Zito earlier in the season, but I cant see why any of you would want to do that now. Vargas and Olsen are getting shots at the rotation(this year AND next), and if you throw in Zito, thats a rotation with 4 leftys.
