In my mind, and I know some would rather a long relief guy, we still need to shore up or add to the end of the game pen guys. It's impossible at this point to know how productive AA will be, and not to be a worry wort, injuries do happen.

 

Let's assume that AJ in fact stays for this discussion.

 

That said, two names come to mind. Arthur Rhodes (Cleveland) and "Everyday" Eddie Guardado (Seattle). Both have been mentioned in trade rumors with other teams so I'm not grasping at straws (writing about players who are unavailable).

 

Both of them are expensive and both them have absolutely (to use the venacular) "sick" numbers. Rhodes, who has pitched ten innings in the last week with an 0.00 ERA and a .000 BAA, has put up an season long ERA of 2.17 and batters are hitting a paltry .210 against the guy. Guardado has performed equally as well, an ERA of 1.59 and hitters hitting only .194 against Eddie.

 

So my question is - who would you trade for either of these guys (AJ excluded)? Seattle is already out of the race, Cleveland at fifteen games back is out of the divisional race, but only 3.5 games back in the AL wildcard.

 

Cleveland needs offensive help. Is there a trade we can make internally or with a third party that get's them the bat they so desperately need in exchange for us getting Rhodes? And for Seattle, who would you trade from our minor leagues or someone sitting on the bench, who could help them rebuild and fetch Guardado in return?

Never been a big fan of his but he's in a groove right now, & Cleveland's got a little bullpen depth & might consider a trade. Problem is, short of dealing a starting outfielder we don't have a bat that would help them. Doubt they'd have much interest in Conine...

 

I wonder if Willingham would interest them? Casey Blake and Ben Broussard aren't exactly lighting it up.

I think Rhodes would still be owed close to 2 million this season. I still have faint hopes that Willingham could play a role in the future with the Marlins, but that's not looking likely.

 

If Guillermo Mota is doing his job, making a bullpen deal is not a necessary move though IMO.

I don't think we'll be aquiring either of those players, both make right around 4 million a year which is a little pricey for us. Any trade for Guardado would probably have to include Randy Winn as well... since i've heard rumblings that seattle wants to move him. I wouldn't be suprised if they'd be interested in in Juan Enc, but I don't think trading our 3rd leading run producer is going to get us in the playoffs. As for Rhodes, he scares me, he's somebody I wouldn't want on my Fantasy team because of his inconsitency the past several years, and if I don't want him on my fantasy team, then I sure as hell don't want him on this team.

 

I think Brad Fuentes is a better option, but we'll never aquire him because those Rockies are so darn stubborn

 

Marte would be fantastic, but that would make us deal AJ to get him.

 

I say we go the Royals and try to pluck either Andrew Sisco (2.51 ERA), Jeremy Affeldt (2.41 ERA) or Mike MacDougal (3.47 & 9.1K/9) for prospects or someone.

 

Or we might look to a former recent Marlin, David Weathers! His 3.96 ERA might be average but if you look at his Home/Road splits (5.68 in HR City Cincy and 2.19 on the road) then I think he's our man. Plus maybe we could get one of their outfielders in a package deal or something... never know. Just my 2 cents...

For myself, and it's Loria's money not mine, I have to believe that if the FO could land either one, money would not be the deal-killer, not with the appetite for winning Loria has.

I prefer the sure thing with Guardado. The Marlins have enough erratic relievers to go get another one in Rhodes. Also, with Seattle, the fish have a better chance of making a deal because of them building for next year. I'd even see if we can get an OF from them too.

 

The best option is Fuentes of the Rockies or Marte of the W. Sox.

 

I have a question, where is Rod Beck or Rob Nen? Not that I would trade for them, but would be curious to see what they still have in those arms.

With Willingham on the DL and AJ off-limits in your scenario and Olsen and Hermida according to the front office, our tradable assets are limited to Conine, Encarnacion and our pitching prospects who strangely haven't come up in any of the rumored trade talk.

In the case of the Royals, who I openly admit I don't know enough about to fashion a trade, or trading for Everyday Eddie, WHO WOULD YOU TRADE? How about a three-way trade that accomplishes what we need?

 

For myself, I don't think it's reasonable to say we won't trade Olsen, Vargas, Johnson, or anyone else (Hermida excluded) in the sense that you can't hold onto all your chips and get someone to just give you their player.

 

Encarnacion isn't going to be traded and Conine hasn't gotten enough playing time to be a factor. We need, in my estimation to look at who is at AAA and AA and see what fit's the trading partner's needs.

MacDougal would unquestionably be the best bargain in the trading market. You can probably get him for about 2 or 3 mid-level minor league prospects. He could come in and save about 15-20 games from this point until the rest of the season. I'm surprised that he hasn't been mentioned as much as Danys Baez or Jorge Julio.

I've been suggesting for over a week now that you should be prepared for a pitching prospect for quality reliever/closer trade.

Fuentes would cost you olsen most likely. He is almost untouchable as their "all star"

If the Marlins were creative (which they have been before), they could land Weathers along with Dunn. Maybe you can include a 3rd team like Detroit and add Lowell, who may draw interests from Dombrowski over there. You can do a deal somewhat like the following:

 

Tigers get:

Lowell

minor leaguer or 2

 

Reds get:

Munroe

Stokes

Kensing

maybe another mid-level prospect

 

Marlins get:

Dunn

Weathers

 

Maybe some others to balance out the deal to everyone's liking.

 

A deal for MacDougal can probably be done for Willingham or Stokes along with 2 other minor leaguers that can breath and have a pulse. Didn't the Marlins get "future considerations" in the trade involving Abraham Nunez for Rudy Seanez?

Personally, at this point, I'd try and make a move for MacDougal because it is a hell of a bargain and doesn't drastically change our roster.

 

The only major move that I would do is deal AJ and that's only if the price is right. That is if I get a decent SP for this year, a SP for the near future and a decent RP for this year. I'm not entirely sold on trading Lowell and bringing Cabrera to 3B at this point of the season. I'd wait until the offseason after taking the time to make a move for another quality OFer, rather than getting an OFer aquired in desperation during this trade deadline.

Please, Weathers is a good veteran player who played very well for us and is playing fairly well on a not so good squad. If we wanted to lose all hope we'd have have signed Hideo Nomo by now...

That's correct. So what could we offer as a satisfactory alternative to Patterson?

 

If you believe Olsen is untouchable, would you trade Vargas or Johnson and maybe another A ball level starter or Messenger or Resop (some combination of starting and relief) for Eddie?

I disagree with you about Weathers. he would be nice to have with the right additional aquisition for the bullpen, like a MacDougal of K.C. or Baez of T.B.

 

However, your mention of Yorkis Perez brought back some funny memories.

I forgot about Yorkis Perez in my thread that involved people that this organization kept around longer than they should have. I guess that he was overshadowd by the Vic Darensbourg era.

 

Hey, does anyone want to do a scavenger hunt to try to find some of the Marlins that were here too long?

 

How much traveling across the globe would we have to do to find the likes of Richie Lewis, Vic Darensbourg, Yorkis Perez, Nigel Wilson, Bret Barberie, Todd Dunwoody, Ryan Bowen, the legendary Junior Felix, and the many others that wore teal too long.

 

I think that if we scoped the supermarkets and fast food restaurants, we may find a few of them.

 

However, Junior Felix would be the hardest to track down because rumor has it that he keeps getting fired for dropping grocery bags or people's orders in the Drive-Thru. Not to mention the rumor that he can't see the order when it pops up on the screen.

I read somewhere (Sports Weekly?) that Guardado wanted to be traded somewhere where he would close. If we got him, would we put Jones in the setup role and make Guardado a closer? I don't think that would be good for team chemistry.

 

Like FishFan79 said, Fuentes is close to untouchable for the Rockies. We've got guys like Riedling, Messenger and De Los Santos (even Bump) that should be in AAA. I would be more comfortable getting two guys than just one. I'm not sure I'd want to give up a top pitching prospect for a middle reliever though- we'll have a few holes to fill in the rotation in the off-season, and I'd like to think one or two of our guys will step in.

 

Seattle has a few decent looking relievers besides Guardado (JJ Putz, Ron Villone, Julio Mateo). I'm thinking it would take one or two A-Ball prospect to get it done (much like the Chick-for-Valdez trade last year).
