That would only make sense if he were suffering from that shoulder injury in years before 2004. And it's doubtful he would be performing so well on a reconstructed shoulder than before he injured it.

 

If any surgery helped, it was the one to improve his eye sight.

Contract year or not, it really doesn't matter. The bottom line is he is healthy, hitting in the clutch and outperforming all expectations.
