Didnt this guy have a baseball career before? Maybe he could look into that during his year off?

A top rookie's 1st NFL contract is very, very important because of all bonuses and guarenteed money, especially for a RB since that position seems to always have the most injuries. Chris Mortensen said something in a recent chat that made a lot of sense, here it is: " First of all, he's not holding out. A holdout is a guy who already has a contract. The first contract you sign - especially if you're a first rounder - is pretty imporant. In my opinion, it's especially important for a running back because, as you see, guys like Shaun Alexander and Edgerrin James are having a tough time getting long-term deals....so, things like escalator clauses are pretty important in a case like this. I'm sure Edwards' signing is important for Benson and Brown."

He refuted that because besides the dreadlocks and the school they both attended, he was a polar opposite.... Now he is looking at a long holdout. If he was such a saint compared to Ricky, then why is he doing this?

Ricky walked away from the game and is only back to recoup some money the Dolphins sued for. I think Chris Mortensen's explanation is a very valid one. When top backs like Edge, who has led the league in rushing twice and Shaun Alexander who finished a very close 2nd just last year, are still young and in the prime of their careers and are having a tough time nailing down a long term deal because they are a RB, just like Benson is, I can understand why he would not sign immediately until he gets a very good deal, especially as the 5th overall pick. Only half of the pre-season has gone by, and if you remember, Edge in his rookie year basically missed all of the preseason for something like this and then came in to lead the NFL in rushing. I think if any position can overcome a holdout, its a RB.
