August 21, 200520 yr Never against Encarnacion, I remain confident in his contribution. But, this stuff with being pulled in the 2nd inning because his wrist hurt... I think we have to be prepared for continuing annoying injuries. And, I think we are stretched right now. Niner can cover RF for Enc. And Jack is okay with that. Who covers for JP (who pouts if he doesn't play but, in fact, appears to need some time off to re-focus his game.) Aguila could cover CF if Jack would give him a chance. (And if Jack keeps him fresh. Fat chance.) (I wonder if Jack, in his retirement, will have nightmares about his misuse of Willingham, Dillon, Aguila and others. I hope so.) Anticipating immenent first-aid, I would bring up Andino as the MIF sub for Easley. (Easley can play around-the-horn and as an emergency OF' but only if there is potentially another 2B/SS back-up. Gonzo and Luis can be fragile.) I'd also like Dillon right now. Space? For openers, why not send Jorgy back down where he'll get a chance to play baseball? This stuff about the "September call-up" doesn't sit with me. When your August Bench is suspect, you re-fortify immediately. I've never liked Bobby Cox personally, but the reasons for his Braves success are evident. Unlike Jack, he knows how to use his Bench and develop players while keeping his Starters fresh.
August 21, 200520 yr Hey Arnie, are you having nightmares about these threads that you create? Because I know they give quite a few of us nightmares. And why create a thread asking questions when you answer every single one of them yourself? Seems pretty pointless to me.
August 21, 200520 yr difference bxn braves and us is that they put their rookies in the middle of the season where there isnt pressure to perform... look its coming close to the playoffs and we are gonna put our best guys on the field to do this thang. even though i like willy, aguila, treanor but we cant just put our double a team on the field just because we want to develop them... not now

Why yes they are (In fact) Dont they all just spit off jibberish mumbo-jumbo and throw in a jab at Jack wherever possible (Yes, they do.) Its enough already! The Marlins are 1 game out of the playoffs!!! Go root for the Phillies if you want to complain at every turn.
August 21, 200520 yr Niner can cover RF for Enc.909847 I'd disagree. imo, he looked awful out there last night.
August 21, 200520 yr Niner can cover RF for Enc.909847 I'd disagree. imo, he looked awful out there last night. 909917 Awful? There aren't five guys in the NL who could have tracked down a couple of those balls hit to deep right center if they were positioned where Conine was. The coaches (I guess that would be Perry Hill) had Conine shaded much farther towards the right field than Enc usually plays.
August 21, 200520 yr From the times I've seen 9ner in RF it appears that he's stronger in LF and much stronger at 1B. He's looked kinda lost in RF. I still want to see him in the lineup everyday with either Lowell or Pierre riding the pine.
August 21, 200520 yr Aguila is probably the one young bench player that hasn't been left to rot in the dugout--at least not since he was recalled from AAA in the middle of the season. Jack has shown he doesn't mind playing him as a fill-in and he'd more than likely get some PT if Enc's injury persists and JP is still struggling. I'd imagine Jorg is being kept around because by all accounts, Lo Duca looks to be having a pretty rough time with his leg and given that the bench isn't being used all that much anyway, a third catcher doesn't seem like a bad idea. But all in all, we still have 3 guys in Conine, Easley, and Aguila who are versatile enough to cover the positions where we've got injury issues right now, and in a couple weeks we can stock the bench with all sorts of people who will never play, maybe even Mordy. :thumbup
August 21, 200520 yr I think Aguila could covered the places in Right that Connie couldnt of. But, Connie has alot better bat. Connie really is more a LF, but I wont fault him for trying out there in RF
August 22, 200520 yr Normally I like FlagMan's topics. He brings up interesting topics to our attention and clarifies the situation to the best of his ability. He's often open to other ideas and other member's contributions to the discussion. But this series about bench depth is missing something. Love ir or hate it, Jack's not going to use the bench. To argue about what roster moves should be made for spots that won't be used is a trivial matter. In my opinion, Jack's bench management is a slight upgrade over what occurred through much of 2003 and 2004 where bench players were given a lot of playing time when we were in contention and when we were out, prospective free agents were awarded with playing time over young players (Weathers over Kensing and Bump; the 4-man rotation idea to get Pavano to 20 wins; Easley over Aguila). It's far from ideal, granted, but it's an improvement.
