Cheap Shot?

Featured Replies

Chicago, IL - Greg Maddox has been very good for quite a few years, but he let his frustration overcome logic when he took a cheap shot at opposing pitcher and rising star (and Cy Young contender, unlike Maddox) Dontrelle Willis.

You see, he knew that Willis had been putting up great numbers not just on the mound but also at the plate, with 3 RBI in his previous two starts. So he decided that since he didn't want Dontrelle to embarrass him with his hitting, he would throw at his head. The throw ended up a bit low, but still hit Willis. Unfortunately, Maddox forgot that the bases were loaded. He just pushed in the winning run (likely ruining the Cubs playoff hopes, his chance at an above .500 record, and the selfish desire to win 15 games again this year) for the Florida Marlins.

Afterward, he was quoted as saying it was either Steve Bartman or Chip Caray that were really at fault.

Interesting note: Both Marlins runs were scored due to a hit by pitch by cheap shot artist Maddox. Juan Pierre scored in the first after Maddox started of the game going for his head.

Both Dontrelle and JP were fine, since Maddox does not have the strength he used to have, so the pitches were not very painful.

The Marlins go for the sweep tomorrow, but Maddox will not get the chance to take another cheap shot at the Marlins.

2 hit by pitch = 2 runs and 1 loss.

I wouldnt go that far dude. Maddux isnt that terrible of a pitcher to do that normally. And the last thing he would want to do is hit a pitcher to walk in a run in a tie game. It brings up the top of the order to.

I just cant see it sorry. This is a HoF pitcher we are talking about. Not Al leitter.

His name is Maddux, not Maddox. I would love a link to this website since I googled up parts of the article and nothing came up.

Also if he was aiming for his head he has horrible accuracy since he hit below his hip.

I think it's a bit disturbing that we couldn't actually 'hit' anyone in today. A sac and a HBP isn't going to cut it down the stretch.

Forget that the bases were loaded? I think that is a pretty big screw up for a pitcher like Maddux. You might argue that it is weird that Maddux, being one, if not the ultimate control pitcher, hit JP and Dontrelle, and that it coulda been on purpose, but i seriously doubt he did. Even he has those kinda days. Besides, he is old already, I dont' think he has the same control he once had.

Please tell me you're not being serious

If it wasn't for his control, he would have been done a few years ago. His continued success is from being able to control his pitches and hit his spots.

If any pitcher who can paint the corners like Maddux aims for your head, it's highly doubtful he'll miss not once but twice. Besides, throwing at another player is used to send a message, what message is he sending by walking in a run with the bases loaded in a close game?
