Here are three Gold Glove winning Shortstops. Who has the best chance at making the HOF?

AVG|OBP|SLG|Hits|HR|RBI|RUNS|SB

.262 |.337 |.328 |2,460 |028 |0 793 |1,257 |580

.314 |.386|.463 |2,929 |257 |1,158 |1,754 |315

.285 |.346 |.430 |3,142 |251 |1,406 |1,632 |271

are all three careers over?

if so, then #3 makes it. You can't overlook 3000 hits

Number 3 is already in the Hall, as is #1.

I'm not sure who #2 is though.

3

#3

I'm guessing #2 is Jeter, projected.

Projected stats don't work, and Jeter does not (as of now) deserve to be enshrined.

#3 should be the only one.

That was my guess as well.

You guys are pretty good:

#1 is Ozzie Smith and #3 is Robin Yount

#2 is certainly Derek Jeter with a modest 5 year projection. I am sure he will be around for longer than 5 years but I didn't want to overinflate his numbers. As markotsay7 said, projected stats are tough because you never know if someone is going to get injured, tank, or take their game to another level. I assumed DJ would continue along at the rate of his average season for the next 5 years and added those to his career totals as of yesterday. If he moved in to a DH role, he could easily have another 8 years as a productive hitter. So, I think these numbers reflect a conservative and realistic achievement potential.

In my previous thread, I alluded to his potential to make it in to the hall based on his post season numbers and heroics, but I think this illustrates how he has an opportunity to make it in based on raw numbers. He matches up well against all of the shortstops currently in the hall save Honus Wagner [and nobody has numbers that touch his]. Again, this is IF he continues to be a productive hitter for at least 5 years.

I just thought it was interesting to see how he could stack up. I did some comparable numbers with Garciaparra and Tejada but they did not match up as favorably - especially given Nomar's recent health issues.

I'll have to get a little trickier for the next one... :mischief

I wonder where Larkin stacks up there...

Larkin:

.295 BA

.371 OBP

.444 SLG

2340 H

198 HR

960 RBI

379 SB

Throw in 3 gold gloves and an mvp plus his strong post season numbers and you have an argument.

Derek Jeter will be in the hall of fame, on his first try and easily.

I think he'll get in but the interesting thing is this: when I look at a potential HOFer I ask myself one question, "Was this guy one of the most feared hitters/pitchers for a period of time?" I don't feel like Jeter meets that criteria - unless it is in October [or November :thumbup ].

Does a leadoff man really need to be 'feared'?

He will have near 2,000 hits after this season, and he is only 31. I would be shocked if he didnt get to 3,000 in 6 years.

IMO his career average will be over .310 and he will probably have 2-3 more gold gloves.

That, coupled with his October success he is an easy choice.

Ricky Henderson was - just ask Ricky! :mischief

Anyway, Jeter is supposed to be the #2 hitter but no one else has been able to get the job done so he's there by default - for now. If we sign JC - I mean Johnny Damon - next year, he'll be leading off. If we sign Andruw, it would be interesting to see how the lineup would shake out. These are two of the hottest rumors going around and frankly I'm not excited about either.

Incidentally - if you guys don't want Burnett, we'll take him...

Don't tell the braves that you plan on signing him...they have an option for him in 2007...they might want to pick it up.
