Just like we did last year with Pavano, whenever another team signs AJ we will get their picks in the first round, or isn't he a grade A free agent? So that is a somewhat a good return and a another good way of looking at him leaving. :mischief2 Always a good way to replenish our farm system. And this time, please no more pitching, pick someone who can hit!!!

Yes. Unless the team is so focused on making their point, they don't offer him arbitration.

I would like to see an emphasis on position players (i.e. hitters) next year instead of pitchers...

Let me break out the cliche-o-tron 3000: FO, please don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

I'm really worried about that.

Not worry, this isn't the 1980 Red Sox. The front office isn't miss out on a draft choice.

Great catch Shaqman. I was worries (and still am a little) that they dont want to pay for another first rounder.

Having said that, i would not be bothered at all if they ended up with the two best relievers in this years draft. i.e. ryan wagner and chad cordero.

This team needs depth in the bullpen something terrible.

I agree with everyones comments regarding adding hitters but let us not forget that our pitching differentiates us from the texas' and cinci's of the world.

What kind of draft compensation might we get for Alex?

ALex is going to be a type A infielder free agent I'm sure.

Don't be so sure on that. Getting arbitration may be the best thing in the world for AJ. He'd get to play on a one year deal at about 6 or 7 million (thanks a lot, Kris Benson), and then he'd hit free-agency again, after what figures to be a better season than his one this year, and next off-season doesn't exactly figure to be a great free agent pitching class either; it'll likely be Barry Zito and not a whole lot else.

AJ may not want it, but his agent surely will advise him that this might be an attractive offer(considering AJ's cost himself somewhere between $8 and $12 million over the life of his deal), and this is something I'm sure Beinfest is already thinking about...

Something I've wondered about - If say the Detroit Tigers sign AJ do we receive the draft pick they would have selected in, which will be pretty high or do we just get a "sandwich" pick no matter who signs AJ ? TIA

Picks 1-14 are protected. So if the Royals sign AJ, we won't get the #1 pick in the draft. We get a sandwich pick no matter what, and if the Tigers sign AJ, I believe we get an additional sandwich pick, and the second round pick of the Tigers.

Let's say that did happen.

Couldn't we trade him?

If the player is a free-agent and he is given arbitration and the player accepts, no, I don't believe we can trade him until that magic date of June 1st. I could be wrong about that...

Someone like Mota or Beckett who will be offered arbitration but are not free-agents can be traded at any point with the new team acquiring the contract determined by the arbitrator, but if the thing with AJ happened...I'm not so sure; there's a reason agents like Boras threaten to accept arbitration offers with their free-agents.

Yeah, that sounds right. I forgot about the FA aspect.

He has already publicly stated that he doesn't like playing here and wants to get out, and lord knows the front office hates him. Not too many folks would go through a year of personal misery simply to "get even."

If his objective is simply to play one more season, raise his stock, then try the market again, he might as well pull a Pudge and take the best one-year deal he can find out there. Something tells me AJ wouldn't exactly be eager to put his earnings in the hands of an arbiter once again...
