Search for new manager begins

I would hate to see Mark Wiley go. He has been awesome for us.

Sure, just ask Villone, Mota, Perisho and Messenger.

He's a coach, not a puppet master. All he can do is guide. The rest is up to the pitchers. Even Leo Mazzone has some pitchers that don't work out.... Albeit, not many... but still a few. I think Wiley was awesome and I think he deserves some credit for the year Dontrelle had...

As for the manager, I have to think that Fredi Gonzalez is the front runner. From what I've read, the front office is looking for someone a little more player-friendly than Jack.. Piniella seems like the farthest thing from that. Who knows though... I'm already dying to know who they hire...

What about Ken Macha??? I like him hes a Moneyball guy and stuff

Too bad we're not a Moneyball team. Playing for the 3-run HR would kill us, especially with the lack of power in the lineup.

There's only one player on our team that's a "Moneyball" corner-stone: Luis Castillo. Other than that we're a singles team with spurts of power...that isn't moneyball.

Low budget teams aren't all moneyball teams, and weak offenses aren't necessarily moneyball offenses.

P.S.: Might as well throw Jeremy Hermida in here too, completely slipped my mind.

Not to mention our starting pitchers aren't Moneyball cornerstones either.

Not sure if I want to hire him, but Dodgers and Tracy have parted ways

i was just about to post that. Tracy and lo duca have a great relationship and he's a players maagers which IMO is what the FO is looking for.

Tracy came off a pretty disappointing season too; his "mastery" of the bullpen was really just Eric Gange...he wasn't the genius that some would have us believe after the '04 season. He isn't a bad guy to add to that second-tier of candidates, but I don't think he should break the top-3.

Really, I think who ever comes in here is going to be held to such unfairly high expectations that no matter what, we'll be disappointed. We're not hiring a miracle worker, just a manager; as soon as we realize as fans that this group of guys just isn't as good as we think they are, the better off 2006 will be.

That would make a good topic thread: What are you looking for in the new manager?

Hmmm...

It depends what direction we're going with for this team.

I mean, if we're reloading and just going for it next year, I'd like to see someone with major-league experience managing, problem is, the market's thin for those candidates, and anyone we hire that figures to be available or is available really is either McKeon in new cloting (Pinella, Bowa) or simply far less qualified than McKeon (Tracy, Trammel, Pena) or, in the unique case of Jim Leyland, just a guy that gets talented teams to underachieve (which kind of sounds like the Marlins' 2005 if you ask me).

I know the prevailing notion around here is that all the Marlins' need is a fresh face to run the team, but that's all well and good for the first two weeks, but that manager is going to have to know how to get his players to play for him and respect him, and most importantly, he's going to need to put his players in the best position possible for their success, with a big part of that being bullpen management. Rookie managers will simply bring the philosophy of their mentors with them, so hiring Girardi may be a mistake because he's learning the ropes in an American League system...so by process of elimination, that leaves Freddi Gonzalez as the only rookie manager (since Cox is a fine person to learn from), and even he just makes me feel uneasy deeming him the most likely choice, at least if we're dead-set on making noise next season.
