Delgado Chooses .300 Average over Team

Featured Replies

I am more upset although not suprised at all by Encarncion the guys effort s?cks and there is a reason why someone with all his physical gifts is merely a run of the mill player. I will be very happy when we drop his dead weight and before anyone rattles off a game or two that he got a big hit i can think of ten games to your one in which he had a chance to get a big hit and swung wildly and struck out. No discipline and no character Ency s?cks !!!

Yeah - I recall his jump at the RF wall in an important game in September - seems he touched the ball and might've flicked it over. A better effort would have made the catch. Bye-bye, with no regrets here.

All these articles about McKeon show that he didn't change, the players did.. which is what I've said all along..

Damn.... all these stories are depressing me. I feel like my grandfather is moving away or something.. I'm gonna miss that old man. He took a lot of undeserved heat...

He's a good guy, and was a huge part of the 2003 run. Heck of a turnaround specialist. But he got lucky with a lot of his moves, especially his bunting and bullpen management, in 2003. The last 2 years he came back to earth. I don't think the players changing affected their play on the field (if Lowell and Pierre had better years, we'd have been in the playoffs easily, which I think is more of a problem on Robinson's end than Jack). But Jack's bullpen managment was questionable at times and he did keep Lowell in the lineup for too long.

The line in the story that got me thinking was the second to last paragraph....."They went on the field to play....well, most of them did". To me this implied Delgado chose on his own to sit it out, especially put in context with the rest of the article which speaks of player/manager issues. But it's open to interpretation both as to if it was his choice, and even if, how much weight you give it. Thank you Wanks for posting the story so everyone can make up their own mind.

I cant believe people start topics like these.... this is such a waste of server space...

Look, I would rather give some young rookie a chance to shine and to show us what he gots, rather than to play Delgado in a meaningless game and subject him to a stupid injury...

If Delgado sat down... give him a break... he is the man....

It was not a meaningless game. It was stated by McKeon and the players that it was very important to them to get the win for Dontrelle. All the other healthy regulars started except for Enc and Delgado. I don't think they cared that YOU would have rather seen rookies play. THE REGULARS wanted to play, all except for 2.

.

Obviously, you were not at the game, as I was. The team played hard and with great enthusiasm in a situation where they could have packed it in. In the ninth inning, when Hermida tied it, the dugout went wild. The team celebration at the end looked like they just clinched the playoffs.

And why is that.... because rookies got a chance to play and show show their stuff... and the only reason that rookies got a chance to start was because veterans (like Delgado) sat....

And I was wrong, the game was indeed not completely meaningless.... but not because so much because of Dontrelle (which I really hope that he beats out Carpenter), but more because we got to see for the last time how much young talent we have on this team for the future. This is especially important because during the off season the FO will have to make some tough desicions on whether to let go, trade, or keep some veterans. They need to determine whether the rookies that we saw in the last game can replace them if we decide to part ways with some veterans. This is the reason that I didnt have a problem with sitting some of the veterans down, including Delgado...

Since I know I'm kind of late to the discussion, and most of what I'm thinking has already been said, I'll just add that I remember distinctly when Carlos was announced as pinch hitter in that game he got one of the crowd's most furious ovations. So, this is just another case of the writers (agenda?) trying to tell the fans how to feel; but the fans clearly know better.

Carlos is a fan favorite. I was one of those in the crowd cheering for him. He's great for the team offensively. I don't think that the writer had any agenda here, and neither do I. Just stating that it appears that Delgado chose to protect his .300 average over helping Dontrelle and the team secure the win. If by some chance Dontrelle loses the Cy Young by a whisker I'll remember that. I'll also be rooting for Delgado as long as he's a Marlin.

Pierremvp1, you and I are usually one the same page, but on this one, if I read you correctly, it's your belief Delgado took himself out of the lineup, and if that is in fact your belief, I don't share that view.

McKeon makes up the lineups. He had Enc penciled in and took him out because the guy showed up late, there's no indication that Delgado didn't want to play, or that Jack was "punishing" him for sins real or imagined.

Rather I believe Jack played Conine because A) Conine was a better defensive player (it appeared to me Jack expected a low scoring game and wanted to put his best defensive team on the field behind Dontrelle) and B) Conine was batting .333 (at PPS) against Ramirez going into the game. And, Delgado was getting himself ready to enter the game if needed as early as the third or fourth inning (as I pointed out above) so I really find it hard to accept the notion that Delgado took himself out of the starting lineup or didn't want to put his .300 average at risk in the final game.

We'll never know, but that is my take.

1) it was a lefty pitcher

2) Jack wanted to play rookies

3) We already had the winning season on the bag

you are putting too much on this.
