Posted October 20, 200519 yr As per the Sun-Sentinel... Don Baylor, who managed Girardi with the Rockies and Cubs, is a leading candidate for bench coach. Others expected to receive consideration include Andres Galarraga (hitting), Gil Patterson (pitching), Mike Harkey (bullpen) and Bobby Meacham (third base). I remember Meacham from his days as a Yankee...I love the youthful makeup of the potential coaching staff. It looks like Zimmer and Stottlemyre will not be joining Girardi. Anyone have some background on Patterson? :thumbup
October 20, 200519 yr If we dont get Mel as a pitching coach, I would really prefer to get back Wiley. He did a bang up job last year with Willis and beckett.
October 20, 200519 yr Galarraga has said he's not ready to come back to the game yet. Wants to spend more time with his family. And Zimmer says he isn't leaving Tampa yet.
October 20, 200519 yr ...And Zimmer says he isn't leaving Tampa yet. Well, it ain't that long a drive -- he can take his time. :mischief Seriously, though... I don't care for Zim. He can go play checkers with McKeon instead. One other thing: I wonder what Mordecai's chances of moving up are, now that management of the big club has been restructured. Personally, I'd hate to lose Mordy to another team because of reduced opportunities for promotion within the organization.
October 20, 200519 yr If we dont get Mel as a pitching coach, I would really prefer to get back Wiley. He did a bang up job last year with Willis and beckett. Absolutely. Mel has pitched some of the games best pitchers up in New York, but you cannot deny the job that Mark Wiley did this past season as a pitching coach. Beckett and Dontrelle (and even the job he did with Vargas and Moehler) all gained valuable experience through him and I think he should be rewarded if Mel doesn't want the job.

Sure, Wiley did a real bang up job with Villone, Mota, Messenger, Resop, Reidling and DeLosSantos. We had the 2nd worst bullpen in the NL under Wiley. The talent he had to work with wasn't that bad, not 15/16 bad. While he was fortunate to have arguably the best rotation in the NL to work with, they only came in 5th place. Compare that to Mazzone in Atlanta with all the injuries they sustained and the Braves still ended up with the 3rd best rotation. Would you say the Braves had a better starting staff throughout the season than the Marlins? Sure Wiley had success with Dontrelle, but that's about it. Beckett and AJ both underperformed. I don't see where anyone is high on Wiley, and I sure won't be disappointed to see him replaced.

I don't see where anyone is high on Wiley, and I sure won't be disappointed to see him replaced. I'm apathetic. There are only a handful of pitching coaches who can take players from the scrap heap and turn them into successful major leaguers again. I have a hard time believing that we had all the pieces in the bullpen to be one of the top 5 in the league, so it's not entirely Wiley's fault. Burnett was a disappointment, but he's a chronic underachiever. Beckett could have easily won 17 or 18 games if not for the bullpen, so he wasn't a real let down. Willis shined, but as I've said before, the extra 2 inches in length added to his jersey this season could have had as much to do with his success as his tinkered windup. I'm a fan of Wiley's, but I'm not an apologist for him either...I think a whole new start next season might be the way to go, clear everything out, start from scratch with the staff (except for Hill, of course).
October 21, 200519 yr Beckett made vast improvments last year, in maturity and the way he pitched games, Becketts only problem now is that he is still injury prone Burnett was doing good for a while until his implosion at the end, how much of that has to do with Wiley I dont know and I doubt it had much to do with him at all. I'm not wild about Wiley, but to say Dontrelle was his only succses is wrong IMO

Beckett underperformed? AJ I'll give you because well he's AJ, but how many wins were you expecting from Josh? The man never had more than 10 wins in a season, so to reach 15 is huge. I'm not shooting you down or anything, but what exactly to you mean by underperformed?
October 21, 200519 yr Would you say the Braves had a better starting staff throughout the season than the Marlins? Absolutely, yes, I would. Al Leiter sucked, Brian Moehler got lucky for a while and then the whole .300+ BAA caught up to him, and we had 1 of 2 guys up from AA starting for most of the season. Our rotation when the season began consisted of a 3rd year lefty coming off sub-.500 season, 2 .500 pitchers, a guy who hadn't pitched in the majors since 2003 (and he threw 13.7 innings), and a 38 year old. Then the 38 year old was replaced by 2 different rookies. Our top 3 starters entered this season with a collective 87-81 record. I mean, sure, we all knew they were talented, but they were still basically a .500 trio when Wiley joined the ballclub. Dontrelle and Josh had the best seasons of their careers, AJ had the 2nd best season of his career (despite basically qutting with a month to go). Natural maturation for the first 2? Maybe. And as for the bullpen, Riedling was never right this season for one reason or another, maybe Wiley could have done a better job of fixing it, who knows. Mota losing his closer job ruined him for the entire season, that's his fault for having a lame mindset. And then, of course, half of them weren't used right and we had no real pattern to our bullpen. For the most part, I fail to see how the bullpen blame ends up on Wiley. Our bullpen was basically the same as Atlanta, garbage, and yet no one blames that on Mazzone. I absolutely want Wiley back, I'd rather have him than Stottlemyre actually.
October 21, 200519 yr Author Here's some Gil Patterson info:Gil Patterson Very interesting...thanks for posting. Sounds like he might be a solid addition to the staff. I like the Roy Halladay connection. :thumbup
October 22, 200519 yr It may not have sounded like it above, but I am neutral on Wiley. I don't understand why people are high on him and why he should get a free pass. If he comes back then so be it, but I would rather Joe have a chance to find someone more to his liking. Other than Perry Hill I would also like to see us start with a fresh coaching staff and a fresh approach to the game.
