November 1, 200521 yr MIAMI -- Reliever Antonio Alfonseca's second stint with the Marlins appears to be over. On Tuesday, the Marlins, who are likely to streamline their payroll, declined a $2.75 million vesting option for the 2006 season for the veteran right-hander, who was 1-1 with a 4.94 ERA in 33 games this past season. The 33-year-old logged 27 1/3 innings, giving up 15 runs while striking out 16 and walking 14. Alfonseca spent a good part of the season on the disabled list. On April 21, he was placed on the DL with a stress fracture in his right elbow. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on June 24 and was reinstated on July 26. In September, he was bothered by a sore elbow. Last December, Alfonseca signed a contract worth $316,000 plus incentives after he failed a physical. He was in line to earn an additional $1.7 million based on appearances. A native of the Dominican Republic, Alfonseca broke in with the Marlins in 1997. A few days before the 2002 season, the former closer was dealt to the Cubs as part of the trade that brought Dontrelle Willis to Florida. After spending two seasons with the Cubs, Alfonseca joined the Braves in 2004, where he was productive in 79 games. That season, he was 6-4 with a 2.57 ERA, tossing 73 2/3 innings. Alfonseca is eligible to file for free agency. He could still work out a new contract with the Marlins. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...t=.jsp&c_id=fla
November 1, 200521 yr Wouldn't be shocked if he signed a new 1 yr deal at a reduced rate. Me either. Especially since he is coming off an injury laden season.

November 1, 200521 yr He spit sunflower seeds at me in 98 or 99 but I like him still anyway. I got to be in his car after the game and met his daughter. (Had a friend that was good friends with him at the time)
November 1, 200521 yr I wouldnt be surprised if he gained more weight I wouldn't be surprised if his torso got shorter.
November 1, 200521 yr I wouldnt be surprised if he gained more weight :lol agreed. I think he'll be back at a reduced rate I hope he is because I really like him, anyone who gets thrown out of a game from the bullpen is my hero

November 2, 200521 yr Was thrilled about this move! Alfonseca needs to get out of town! I'll take him for a Mil. but nothing else!
November 2, 200521 yr This was absolutely expected. No way in hell the Marlins are going to take on a $2.75M contract for a guy with questionable health. Neither will any other team, so sure we can still sign him for considerably less.

November 2, 200521 yr I wouldn't mind seeing Pulpo back with the club, but perhaps they rather go with healthier younger players.
November 2, 200521 yr Of all the veteran free agent pitchers the Marlins signed this past offseason, they only bothered to sign one to a multi-year contract. That was Alfonseca, well, before a physical revealed some preexisting medical problems, not directly related to his injury this year IIRC, and the club offered him an incentive-laden contract. Yeah, he's coming back.
