Marlins, Willis ready for Long Term Talks

Featured Replies

Thats okay if he performs, however due to his past history of injuries and the perrenial blister problems, if I were him I would want security as he may end up missing another large chunk of time on the DL and once again go to arby without the stats to get him what he is worth. Whereas I think we all know what he is really worth and once the blister problem is finally brought under control (i think that a lot of the other problems may well be due to him compensating for this after a blister) he will have that 20 win season that has been predicted since he left high school and will command a rather larger salary.

Now it sounds like Sosnick is not so sure.........

Willis may get 1-year deal

After meeting with the Marlins' front office in July, the agent for pitcher Dontrelle Willis was encouraged that the team would offer its ace a multiyear contract after the 2005 season.

Four months later, agent Matt Sosnick isn't so optimistic.

"I'm expecting it to be a one-year deal,'' he said Tuesday. "They don't have a history of doing these types of (long-term) deals (to arbitration-eligible players). My guess is if they haven't done it before, they won't do it now.''

Sosnick, who said he hasn't had any recent conversations with the Marlins, said he has been reading media reports about the team trying to trade key players because of financial problems. Sosnick expects to talk with the team after Thanksgiving, but he said it is too early to determine if he will reach a one-year contract without taking Willis' case to an arbitration hearing.

Sosnick has hired arbitration expert Rick Shapiro to argue his case.

Willis led the majors in wins, going 22-10 with a 2.63 ERA last season, and finished second in the NL Cy Young Award voting to St. Louis' Chris Carpenter.

Willis made $378,500 in 2005. He should make at least $4 million in 2006.

"That's a whole lot more money than I've ever had in my life,'' Willis said last week when asked about his possible arbitration payday.

So sad, but so true.

I still wonder why so many here were upset when it seemed as if the Dodgers wanted him...

I personally think Mike Hill would be a better GM than Beinfest.

Though it's ironic that Mike Lowell got the kind of deal complained that Beinfest never gives out.

And look what happened to that one. :confused

That's a unique situation, given the shadiness around the whole decline of Lowell, but it is a valid point.

However, to that I say look what happened to Derrek Lee (although he'd never put up numbers like that here), Pudge, Urbina, Pavano, Penny, Burnett and Seanez.

No offense, but what has Mike Hill done to make you say that? He's never been a GM before, has he?

The Marlins really aren't in the position to make any long-term plans, whether that be signing players to long contracts, orchestrating a minor league plan or investing heavily into the community. Until the ownership settled, which is tied directly to the stadium issue, this is the fate of the Marlins. Year by year, shooting for .500 on a budget hoping things break right while alienating some people as club officials work towards the greater goal.

Not only am I all for signing him to as long a contract as possible....I'd like to explore the options of cloning him. He should be a Marlin his whole career. You couldn't ask for more in character, hustle, excitement...and the ability as good as it is gets better every year.

I think its rather soon ... wait an extra year and then do it

I wouldnt mind having the Train here for an extra 4-5 years

at worst he can be a very durable 3rd starter ... with a game face on to go out and perform day in and out

Yes, a 3rd starter. That's what I think of when I think of Dontrelle. :plain
